Does the drive come with a usb cable and if it doesn't which one will I need to buy?

The external hard drive does come with the necessary USB cable to plug into any compatible USB port. The cable itself has a male USB 3 type A connector on one end and a male USB 3 micro-b 5-pin connector on the other end and is about 18 inches in length.

Yes it is USB 3.0 powered without the need for an extra usb exclusively for power or an external power cord.

will this hard drive work on my Dell desktop computer?

I have a WD Elements 2TB USB drive. It has worked with several computers and never failed to work with any computer. I have helped set up a couple of Dell desktop computers at my church. They have worked with every USB drive I've plugged in to them. I haven't tried that particular combination of drive and computer. I've never been struck by lightning either.

A family member has an old school pc with winxpsp3 32 bit. Will this external drive be seen on this system? Thanks

XP Size Limitation is 2TB, so yes, it should work, my disk is at work or I would test it for you. Disks exceeding 2TB in size must use GPT instead of MBR, XP does not natively support GPT unless the drive manufacturer provides a driver.

where is it manufactured?

For what it is worth, mine says Thailand. Don't know if this is the only place they make them or not of course.

Does it transfer folders or just files? With thousands of files, transferring by files would become a disorganized mess.

If you have Windows 10 or a Mac, use the backup function to backup. If your want to backup up your documents, just drag the folder over to the drive. Yes, to answer your question, you can just drag a folder over and the files would follow, just make sure you are copying the folder and not just the shortcut.

I LOVE newegg, but cannot stand how many drives don't specify the disc RPM. It's such a vital spec. Is this 5400 or 7200? Can I possibly get this 3GB to go 7200 RPM ? Why I have to ask this is beyond me, but any help would be appreciated! :)

The Western Digital Elements series are 5400 rpm. I have used them for DVR storage drives for 3-4 years and haven't had any problems. I also use one for Adobe Light Room backup storage. For faster applications like real time video, the 5400 rpm isn't really fast enough. Just depends on your application. For portable use with a laptop, 5400 pulls less current and yield longer battery life.

What formatting is needed for Mac Air?

Hello, Macs use different file systems than Windows or Linux, I would look over the URL below to get acquainted with the file systems that are used when formatting a hard drive to work on a Mac, hope this helps! https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mac-file-system-external-drive/ Newegg Support

The WD Elements 2TB Portable Hard Drive is a compact USB 3.0 drive for Windows users who want to carry, back up, or move files; it also works with USB 2.0 devices and requires reformatting for other operating systems.

Recommended For

Windows laptop owners who need to free up internal storage or keep a second copy of work files, photos, and videos on a small drive they can carry between locations.
People who want portable bulk storage for occasional backups or transferring large folders, and can prioritize capacity and convenience over SSD-level transfer speeds.
Students or commuters who want to carry a collection of documents, photos, or media between compatible computers in a compact, bus-powered drive.
Users with a Mac who are comfortable reformatting the drive before using it as writable storage; WD ships this model formatted for Windows.

Real-World Use Scenarios

When a Windows PC is running low on space, move older photos, videos, downloads, or documents to the drive to free room on the internal disk while keeping those files accessible over USB.
For routine Windows file backups, connect the drive and use File History or another backup tool to keep copies of important folders; it provides a local backup destination, but should not be the only copy of irreplaceable files.
When a PS4 is short on storage, the drive can be formatted as extended storage for games and apps. Formatting erases existing files on the drive, and using it this way means it is no longer a regular Windows file-storage drive until reformatted.
For carrying a personal media or document library between locations, keep files on the drive and connect it to a compatible computer when needed; its portable design suits transport, though it is a mechanical hard drive rather than a fast editing drive.
If you want to use the same drive with both Windows and macOS, reformat it to a file system both can use; back up its contents first because formatting deletes data.
