Pros: Great performance for the price. Current drivers for me (17.2.1) are much better.
Cons: None
Overall Review: Update To My 01-28-2017 Review : I’ve been holding out for a new Ryzen system to serve as a new HTPC/regular PC. Because of that, I worked at getting my RX 480 DirectX 12 RX 480 ARMOR 8G OC 8GB video card video card to work with my Windows 10 Pro, AMD A10 5800K, Asrock FM2A88X Extreme6+ MB HTPC. This system has an Asus VK278 1080P monitor and a Vizio E55-E1 55” 4K TV connected to the RX 480. The main objectives are upscaling blu-rays to 4K resolution on the 4K TV with MPC HC and madVR, and using either monitor for regular computing. Had been using the radeon-crimson-16.7.3-win10-64bit driver with fairly good success. Finally, trying non-whql-win10-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-relive-17.2.1 worked for me – but there’s a few things I had to do to make it work. 1. Plug all monitors into the RX 480 card. 2. Disable the on-board video in both the Asrock BIOS and Windows Device Manager. 3. If you’ve already blocked auto driver install in Windows Group Policy, unblock it. See the howToGeek website and search “How to Prevent Windows from Automatically Updating Specific Drivers” using the Windows Group Policy editor. 4. In Windows safe mode, completely uninstall the old AMD video driver with guru3d’s Display Driver Uninstaller. 5. Unplug your network connection to prevent Windows from auto-installing new driver from the web. 6. Reboot to normal Windows mode. 7. Block auto-install of updated AMD driver (refer to step 3 above) ONLY FOR THE ONBOARD VIDEO. Doing this will allow updates of the RX 480 driver. For some strange reason, Windows would keep installing the onboard video driver, even with onboard video disabled in both the BIOS and Device Driver! 8. Install Radeon-Crimson-17.2.1 -Win10-64Bit driver package or later (later hopefully works); ignore error message about incompatible video. This driver is NOT compatible with HD 7000 series onboard AMD APUs, but is compatible with the RX 400 series. 9. Reconnect your internet and reboot. Without blocking the on-board video driver, the driver would keep reinstalling and conflicting with the RX 480 driver! Then I would have frequent screen blanking and driver crashes. With the 17.2.1 driver I’m getting almost no screen blanking or driver crashes. If you have subsequent issues with the newer RX 480 drivers using your older AMD APU with non-compatible on-board graphics, revert to the previous workable RX 480 driver, and then block auto-install of newer RX 480 drivers the same way you did for the on-board graphics detailed above. MPC HC with madVR now delivers flawless 2160P upscaling of blu-ray or DVD videos (zero dropped, delayed, or repeated frames). With the proper TV calibration, codec, and filter settings, it's amazing how good the upscaled video looks.
