DoA

Cons: tried initializing both disks, errors on both in both the Windows Disk Manager, followed up by Mini Partition Wizard.

Overall Review: I'm hoping to have better luck after MPW does a disk recovery scan, but otherwise I may be seeking a refund for faulty hardware.

Hi Anonymous,

We regret to hear about your experience the WD Red NAS hard drive and appreciate your time for providing the feedback. Please ensure that the internal drive is connected properly on the SATA port of the computer on both ends and to test the drive on Windows computer using our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics program by connecting it on a different SATA port of the computer and a different computer.

If the test is inconclusive or showing the result as failed and you have recently purchased the drive then you can return it to the place of purchase. However, if the product is past their replacement policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive if it is under warranty.

So far so good

Pros: Pro, lots of storage

Cons: none really, but it takes half a day to load it up with my terabytes of Backup files

Overall Review: The first (2) 8 terabyte drives I bought died after a few days, so I gave up for a year and used a couple smaller drives. So finally tried again hoping the technology had improved, and this drive is working well.

WD Reds FTW

Pros: Large capacity
Decent $/TB at this size

Cons: No cons really. I had three already so I knew what I was getting into.

Overall Review: These 8TB Red's work great in my NAS, so I bought a couple more to fill in the remaining two slots. They're quiet -- I only hear the NAS fan -- and their reputation speaks for itself.

Failed after 2 months

Pros: Great amount of storage

Cons: - Failed after 2 months
- The WD80EFAX made very audible humming noise. Unlike the other WD 8TB WD80EFZX I also have which is very quiet

Overall Review: Would not recommend this newer 8TB model.

Hi Anonymous,

We regret to hear that your WD Red NAS Hard Disk Drive is not getting detected on your computer and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. As a troubleshooting step, check that both the data cable is securely plugged in at each end and the power connector is securely connected to the drive. In order to isolate the issue of the drive connect the drive as secondary storage on the SATA port of different computer.

If the drive gets detected than test the drive using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for windows by following the link provided below.

"Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows":
https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=940

Current drive technology dictates that some noise will occur during normal drive operation. The type and volume of noise are dependent on whether the is drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked.

We have placed a few helpful link below providing more information to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation.

"How To Tell If The Noise or Sound An Internal Drive Makes is Normal":
https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16309

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

"How to get an RMA to replace a defective product, or obtain a power supply or USB cable for a WD product":

We would like to follow-up with you to help discover the root cause of your hard drive's abnormal behavior in order to provide the positive resolution to your experience. We would recommend you to contact us by phone or email from the link given below. We would be happy to assist.

RED FALG - don't buy I bought 3 8TB RED drives. 1 was defective from the start . Not able to get the 3 (short) year warranty for 2 out of them (I could for the replacement done by Newegg.

Pros: You can find them cheap (not price effective - they die fast - they are regular green WD's with TLER activated and little firmware change) The WD green I had lasted 8 years. Much better QA in past.
You can brag of that you have a Red drive to your buddies, but this is sold as a NAS drive and it fails there.

Cons: I bought in February , lured by a promo 3 8TB reds (I just got another Synology NAS to replacea 10 year old one (still working, but OS is not suported anymore)
2 were working , one was dead, and unable to be revived with their tools (which for my intention in using in a NAS would have been a RED flag
In the past, outside WD enterprise, al WD red's died prematurely compared with other brands (not many left anyway - corporate consolidation to keep innovation and competition at bay)
If you use it in a PC, go ahead, it's a WD Green with TLER (that it's useless as a single disk, you paid for the sticker color)

I am not sure why I can not get the proper wearranty, and why the replacement of the DOA one worked.
If I knee I would have returned them all.
I doubt that Newegg does this tricks, they have enough margins on this ones, I think it's WD logistical sales that botched it. Dealing in past with WD is more probable.

Overall Review: I would relabel this series RED FLAG (DONT'T BUY)
more appropriate namen. The 8 TB RED drives I have are dying EXACTLY after 3 years on a anyway shortened warranty (they consider fabrication date, you have to go to a lengthy process in "My WD" to proove you bought them.

Do yourself a favor and buy the least costly enterprise drive instead of this cheap ones (New egg has some nice deals on helium filled 10TB ones , obviously NOT WD)

PS, the problem with a dyunf disk in a NAS is resyncing the other after you replaced which stresses the already feable manufactured ones even more. They will die in a domino effect afterwards.

Manufacturer Response:
Hi Ovidiu C.,

Thanks for your time reviewing the WD Red family of NAS Hard drives. You’re correct, the warranty starts on the build date of the drive. We stand behind our products and are happy to update the warranty to reflect the date the drive was purchased with a valid proof of purchase.

Please know each drive must pass our rigorous quality standards before leaving the factory. We have no control how the drive was handled/shipped after leaving our warehouses. Therefore, it is always recommended testing a suspected drive outside the RAID enclosure with our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics utility to determine the health of the device with the algorithms designed by the manufacturer of the device to rule out compatibility concerns regarding unsupported enclosures diagnostic utilities. For more information, please follow this link below.

We understand that you may have already shipped this drive back for replacement. In the event you haven’t already done so, we would very much appreciate you contact us directly by phone or Email below in order to discuss this matter further and assist with replacing this drive for you. If you would please mention this Newegg review within your initial contact with our WD Red support team as reference, we will be happy to investigate this matter and expedite your shipping as an accommodation for your trouble.

Avoid this marketplace seller (TDT Tech)

Pros: I finally got a refund

Cons: One week after my order they contacted my and said that the two "new" WD RED 8T NAS drives had failed during testing and they were issuing a refund. I guess I was lucky - others have stated that they received old drives sold as new.

Used Drives

Pros: The price was in line

Cons: The drives had 4000 to 10000 hours on them

TDT Technology is fraudulently misrepresenting used drives as new

Pros: No idea whether WD Red's are any good, since the drive I received was a used drive and is being returned immediately.

Cons: Drives sold by TDT Technology are not new drives. The drive I received had almost 7,000 hours on it, and had been stripped from a WD easyStore Desktop backup system. It was not a retail drive like I'd ordered. This is completely unacceptable.
