I am unsure of the reasoning behind your question.

This is a CPU, but that is a piece of computer hardware.

Hardware is a generic term for any all physical electronics components (things that can be touched with your hands IE. not software applications such as Windows, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and such).

This is identified as an APU because it also processes graphics - Traditionally in computers you would have a separate CPU and Graphics card, with this kind of processor it also can serve the job of a graphics processor, although its performance is somewhat limited and can be easily surpassed by mid-range gaming graphics cards.

Not likely - this processor is made specifically for the FM2 socket type, and relies on motherboard support for the graphics part of the APU.

Without an exact model number, I cannot say for sure, but It would look like no.  The HP 2000 model I found on HP's site (HP 2000-2b09WM) uses an AMD E series APU.  Looking up the E series APU on AMD's site says it uses a FT1 BGA connector socket, where as the A8-5500 uses a FM2 socket connector.

How good is the stock fan/heatsink?

I don't know yet, since I haven't finished building it yet.  I had an older system with stock AMD cooler and it was fine - quieter than an Intel system I had and cooler.

The AMD cooler was easy enough to install, mounted securely, and had little squares of heat sink paste spread across the bottom of the heat sink.

Also, I just built an Intel I3 system with stock cooler and it was fine - plenty cool and very quiet.

I would try the stock cooler and see what you think, especially if you have a case that has access to the backside of the motherboard.  Then, if you are not satisfied, you can fairly easily swap out the cooler without having to rip everything out.

If you plan on overclocking etc., it might be a different story, but I don't.  I plan on using the built-in graphics also.  It is mainly for basic business purposes (otherwise I figure you would probably be buying a different processor).

No, FM2 chips can only be installed in a FM2 Socket.  You will need to purchase and use an FM2 Socket Mobo for this APU.

What is the best RAM speed to use with this processor? Putting together a desktop on a Gigabyte A75M-UD2H motherboard.

Right off, I would say it looks like the CPU and motherboard aren't compatible - the A75M-UD2H is a Socket FM1 motherboard, the A8-5500 is a Socket FM2 CPU.  Also, the CPU isn't on the compatibility list for the motherboard:

Beyond this potential issue, the motherboard drives the memory types a system can use.  This particular motherboard supports DDR3 2400/1866/1600/1333/1066 memory.  The manufacturer provides a list of supported memory at:

I would recommend DDR3 1866 or better memory, and double-check on the CPU support for the motherboard if you already own that piece.

Each core has its OWN memory! WOW? Exactly! 
Asus F2A55-M FM2 AMD is correct mobo to use with this CPU.
A high quality board with good features including USB3.

I was considering buying one of these to replace the a4-5300 currently in my HTPC.  Could anyone tell me how tall the top of the fan on the cooler is from the motherboard?  I need to make sure this thing will fit!

Sir, it is a VERY SMALL heatsink/fan unit. I mean, ridiculously small, as in almost as small as the old HSF units they put on old Slot 1 cpu's small. I can't imagine it being too tall for any HTPC enclosure. If it is, then that enclosure was designed poorly to begin with. I would change out the stock TIM with a good aftermarket thermal paste, though. I think for an HTPC, this would be a very good choice as it still runs really cool.
