is it true that this cpu runs hot even in idle when using the stock cooler?

If you are not gaming or overclocking, the stock heatsink/fan work fine; mine idles about 33.C.

A big source of confusion is that All aftermarket temperature monitoring apps, like HWMonitor can not detect AMD CPU temps correctly, and report false high readings.  Only use AMD apps, or apps that come (on the disc) with your Mobo.  You can also check idle temps in Bios, use GPUz to check Radeon temps (GPU/CPU on same chip), or physically touch the base of the heatsink with your finger (if your not gaming, it won't be hot).   Great chip, adaquate cooler.

PS  I also disabled 'turbo', so the max speed of my proc is 3900, not 4100.  There was no measurable hit to performance, but the chip draws less power and runs cooler :)

does the processor come with thermal compound?

The fan that comes with the processor has thermal compound on it but you do not get anything other than that to add more. If you don't plan on using the fan that came with it then you will need to purchase a tube.

Can I turn the graphics portion off entirely?

I'm not sure about turning it off entirely, but you can select not to use it as your primary graphics in the bios.

this is a socket FM2 processor. yes its compatible with the motherboard however i suggest you change to a more future proof socket. get a FM2+ processor instead.

Does the quad Core in this APU mean (2 core cpu) and (2 core gpu)?

This is a 4-core CPU, with 2 modules of 2 cores (or theads) each, that share some resources.  Google PileDriver core for a full description.

This chip is identical to the A10-6800k, except that on the GPU side it only has 2 of the 3 (128 thread) Radeon cores active.

So this chip has 4 CPU cores (in 2 modules), plus 2 GPU cores.

is really there is radeon 8570hd graphics present in this processor?

Yes, AMD "APU" means the processor includes CPU and GPU (graphics).  You can get full-size PCIe graphics cards which performs faster than this integrated GPU, but this one is plenty fast.  I use it for games including World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 with no slowness.  (Diablo3 does not yet support these newer graphics chips).

I also played all these games on the previous version APU with the Radeon HD 7560D, and they worked great, except for some rare slow down with Starcraft 2.

In the BIOS settings, can you actually disable the built in GPU? I'm going to be getting an ASUS motherboard Crossblade Ranger, and I'm going to be reusing my Nvidea 450GTS until i can get a 760gtx and i don't want the processor trying to overrule my 450. I have a feeling that if it tries to run its own GPU it will loose processing power.

the built in gpu  will not override the video card if you connect to your monitor using the connector on the card
