Can this drive be mounted in a desktop tower system? If so, do I need an adapter?

Yes, this drive can be mounted in a tower system.  I used a 2.5" to 3/5" adapter by SIIG that supported two drives and just used the one.  I would recommend this drive for any system under the age of 6 years.  Going further back would restrict bandwidth to SATA 1 standards unless it was a gaming system and provide limited return on the investment.  I just upgraded a 5 year old Core i7 quad core PC with this drive and Windows 8.1 and it flies.  Should be good for another 5-7 years!

I believe you are talking about the small black piece?

The adapter would be added to change the height from 7mm to 9.5mm.

I do not use because it is in my desktop system, however this adapter would fit the ssd snugly/securely in a laptop if you cloned the original hdd to the Crucial M500 480GB.

I think some of the hdd's in laptops were 9.5mm in height.

The adapter would stop the ssd from bending on the internal SATA connectors in a laptop.

The adapter would compensate for the missing 2.5mm height, it slightly press against the panel on the bottom of a laptop after re - installing the panel.

Intel is also includes this adapter with their ssd's.

Dose this product include software?

This M500 does NOT come with any software whatsoever however many of the SSD purchasers already have cloning software which would be required to complete a migration from platter type disk drives over to a solid state drive.  FYI, Acronis True Image 2009, one of many cloning software packages, is one of the tested cloning packages to complete this migration.  You can use more current versions of Acronis but 2009 works for me personally and has paid for itself more times than I care to remember.

i have an HP envy laptop, will this work in this system, and will I need any additional adaptors?

Yes it will work in your laptop. The only thing you will need is an adapter and software to transfer your data from one drive to the other. I installed one in a Lenovo thinkpad and a Dell Inspiron E- 1505. The speed difference is really outstanding. I believe you can get a Crucial laptop kit through Newegg. The kit comes with an Apricorn SATA to USB adapter and the Crucial data transfer suite CD. It is easy to use and works really well. I hope this helps.

Hello, Yes you can use this internal SSD for an external SSD drive with the proper housing and interface.  To use on a USB port you need a 2.5" SATA housing (USB 3.0). Or to use external SATA port you need a 2.5" SATA housing with a external SATA port. You must then plug it in and format the drive, format depends on the OS, Windows or OSX.

This drive comes with nothing but the drive and a spacer. I downloaded hard drive clone free from cnet and it worked fine. Again nothing comes with this not even a manual. It does come with the screws.

Hello, would this work as a replacement drive for an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" with an i5 processor that has thunderbolt?

I installed it on a PC with AMD Quad chip.  The only problem I've had is I had to remove Acronis 2014 because Windows 8.1 froze up.  Acronis is now working on that problem.  Other than that, it is working very well.

Will this drive fit directly in the HP Envy and MacBook Pro notebooks?

It should.  All laptops adhere to a standard 2 and 1/2 inch drive width and this hard drive is compliant with that size.  I put this in a lenovo T61 thinkpad just fine.  Some laptops have an adapter on the existing hard drive to mount the hard drive and all you need to do is remove that mount (attached via screws) from the original hard drive and put on the new hard drive.  The drive holes on the hard drives are all on the same place.   For desktops you need to buy a hard drive cage adapter from 3.5" to 2.5" like this KINGWIN HDM-226 Internal Dual 2.5" HDD/SSD to 3.5" Plastic Mounting Kit   To migrate exact image (data, apps, OS, and settings) from original hard drive to new hard drive I use and bought Paragon Drive Copy Professional ver 12.     But going w/ a fresh install of OS is sometimes better.

Is this drive compatible with a Lenovo T440s laptop?  Is there a better drive for my laptop?  If so, what is it and why?

These drives are compatible with just about ANY standard SATA connector. I've used on very old (original) SATA all the way up to the latest hottest SATA boards.  The good thing about SATA is that SATA is SATA.

On any speed of SATA connection you will have very noticeable speed increases, even on external USB -> SATA adapter, disk speed is much better.

The main question is if your laptop has a standard 2.5" SATA drive it in today. If yes, then it's a direct swap. This drive is THIN, it's the 7MM size which is smaller in height than the standard 9.5mm SATA drive, but it does come with the "adapter" (a plastic piece with stickers) to fatten it up if you have a 9.5mm bracket.
