Would it be a good idea to pair it with a heatsink? Or does it never reach temperatures high enough to need a heatsink to avoid thermal throttling?

They wouldn't offer them with heatsink if there wasn't need for them. With that being said, my stepson has no heatsinks on both of his, and he's not had any problems. I think it comes down to choice. My motherboard came with heatsinks and I've yet to see them even get a little warm. Hope this helps.

I have the same Dell laptop as yours, but I bought Intel 670P 1 TB NVMe SSD instead.  So, if the WD uses the same protocol as the Intel, it would work in that Dell laptop

In theory it should work without an issue, in the same way that a PCIe 3.0 GPU will work in a system that only supports PCIe 2.0.  With just 2 lanes of PCIe 2.0 available on that motherboard's m.2 slot though, you won't get the full performance of this drive (most likely less than half the bandwidth), but it should still be faster than a SATA SSD.  If you're not planning to use this as a boot drive, you could use a PCIe expansion card M.2 adapter to plug the SSD into a normal PCI Express slot and get the full performance.

If your existing PC has the same type NVMe SSD, it has that little screws at one end to tighten down the NVMe SSD.

Nvme drives like this don't suffer as much from not having DRAM as they can use ram.  However, I have read in some places that it has an SLC cache, but I am not sure whether this is true as I cannot find it on the product page.

Yes, PCIe is backward compatible. You can put a 3.0 into a 4.0 slot but it will only run at 3.0 speed.

Shouldn't be an issue, I've used M.2/NVMe drives with X99 and X299 for years without issues.  Just make sure you update your BIOS first!
