WIll this work in a mac?

If a Sata drive works in macs, then yes, because it's a standard sized sata drive. But even if it works, it will be like buying a sports car to drive a few blocks down Main St. Pipelines are made for security camera syatems that need to be constantly writing for years(a data stream never stops coming down the 'pipeline') . You dont need to pay the premium if you're just using it for a regular computer drive.

Does a SATA cable come with the hard drive?

No it does not. I suggest if your SATA is a SATA lll 6.0 then get a cable that is the exact speed. It will down write to a SATA ll 3.0 but you will lose a little speed performance.

is the hard drive for dvr only? can I use it on a desktop computer?

This is designed for a security DVR - do not use this HD in a computer there are too many other faster drives designed for computers. This drive is not for speed.
