can I install a different O.S. on this drive than what is on my computer?

I'm not really sure because I got this for the backup purpose for Mac air. It's been working fine so far. For the OS installation, I think it will depends upon your PC because sometimes old one does not support any boot from the external hard drive. So you should check your BIOS first to make sure that your pc can support it.
