Can this be used as a back up for any and all mac computers and laptops?

It should work with any Mac that has a USB port. You'll get full USB 3.0 speed if your Mac has USB 3.0 ports. If your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, the drive will still work, just at the slower USB 2.0 speed. I use one of these with my 2012 13" Macbook Pro to back up a 4TB LaCie 2big. So far, I'm very pleased with it.

The speed is 7200 RPMs. These are the best drives I have ever used. I have 7 and no problems with any. 4 of them travel all the time and still no problems.
