Not Spectacular 10/29/2018 12:37:06 PM

Pros: The space is huge of course. Using Blackmagic Disk Speed test on Mac with 5GB chunks for testing it was averaging 185 MB/s write and 180 MB/s read, so I think the speed is good. We'll see after I've had it for awhile. I'm fixin' to do a copy of about 5TB to it. It's cruising along on one TB now, says about 2 hours but I think it will be a lot less.

Cons: NON-STANDARD MOUNT HOLES. SEAGATE: PLEASE tell the community why you would do this! I have racks that slide in and can only get two of four mount pins in. I did a workaround for the back two and screw ed (why can I not type S C R E W E D here without a profanity filter picking it up??) them in on the bottom with washers at the corner of the plastic slide in my case, but it's outlandish that a user would have to do that!

I think we deserve to know what your reasoning is here! WHY would you step away from standard case mounting and do this nonsense?

EDIT 10/29/18: Drive is dead. Poor quality. This makes 4 or 5 Seagate drives that went bally up in less than 3 years. DO NOT BUY SEAGATE.

Overall Review: EDIT 10/29/18: Drive is dead. Poor quality. This makes 4 or 5 Seagate drives that went belly up in less than 3 years. That's like $1500!!! DO NOT BUY SEAGATE.

Three failed within the first week 6/25/2018 12:45:08 PM

Pros: None

Cons: Had three of five of these drives fail within the first week while writing data to the RAID6 array. This is the worst failure rate I have ever experienced for HDDs. Will be sending in for RMA.

Overall Review: These drives were placed into a Synology NAS with fans at hign in a 24/7 climate controlled room. The RAID 6 array was created and about a TB of small files was RSYNCd to the volume. Within the first day of transfer, two of the drives failed. A day later, a third failed. I do not trust these drives with anything at all. I will try Seagate's Iron wolf brand next, as several members of my lab have had decent success there.

SMR Overlaps the Recorded Track Layers 6/19/2018 10:08:05 AM

Pros: Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) records data in overlapping bands on the hard disk instead of micro-spacing them in the usual, standard way. This allows about 25% more data to be stored in the same physical space on the disk.

Think of roof tiles or shingles that overlap each other in layers on the roof of your house. This is effectively how SMR works.

Read and Write speeds are good but not as fast as, say, a Toshiba X300 drive. On the other hand, you do get 8TB on a single drive - not bad!

Intended to be used as an archive drive. Store a lot of data (not all at once), and then Read/access that data as often as you like, hopefully for many years. Just don't keep deleting and writing lots of new data all the time like you might do with a workhorse data drive or game drive.

Comes with a 3-year warranty. Not great, but better than the typical 2-year warranty often seen these days on many drives.

Cons: The Write speed seems to slow down when saving very large amounts of data in a single task. Several GBs here, several GBs there, no problem. But, if you tell it to Write, say, 25GB or more at a time then you may see a significant slowdown of Write speed. So, it's not a workhorse drive, and DEFINITELY NOT SUITABLE for use as an NAS drive.

Overall Review: We have the same drive in a special external enclosure. Seagate calls it the "Innov8". When loading it up with a very large music collection, a large photo collection, and a bunch of videos we discovered it worked at its fastest speed when we told it to Write/save about 5GB to 10GB at a time.

SMR drives need several more years of usage to determine if they are a long-term reliable drive technology. We use our SMR "Innov8" drive regularly, but we still have all data on it backed up elsewhere just to be safe. Suggest you do the same.

The Seagate Archive Drive is great for storing loads of stuff including backups. Just don't use it as a photo/video scratch drive or in an NAS setup.

not happy 2/25/2018 10:10:03 AM

Pros: Lots of space for the price

Cons: I purchased two sets of four over a six month period. So, it is unlikely one bad batch. Of the eight drives, three have died.

Overall Review: Using these in a FreeNAS scenario. With a RAID10 (ish) configuration. Make sure you review the drive's use cases. I was taking its limitations into account but the dying drives still makes me not interested in purchasing any more. We're moving back to NAS rated drives.

You get what you pay for 9/3/2017 4:14:06 PM

Pros: Cheap
Does what I expected it to do
Tons of storage
8GB drive is (or was) only $10 more than 6GB drive

Edit: Pretty quiet most of the time

Cons: First one came DOA
It can be slow. I averaged about 50mb/s when transferring files. Depends what you're transfering obviously, would max out at 105mb/s and get down to 4mb/s sometimes for breif moments.
Can get noisy
Slowed down my computer's start up time considerably

Edit: Ever since I started using it as an external solution quite some time ago it hasn't affected the speed of my computer. In fact the transfer speeds increased/became more consistent to around 80mb/s

Overall Review: This drive you get what you pay for, got mine for $220 for 8TB of storage, so you can expect there to be performance sacrifices. First one came DOA but got a new one in a week, I guess 2nd time is the charm. To get a better transfer speed, I moved 2.85TB of storage to this drive in the morning, about 11AM, let it run, and it was done when I got back at 2AM so at least it's not so slow that it takes more than a day.

Edit: Here I am Sept 3rd, 2017, and the drive works great still so I added an egg (4 eggs now). I've been using it in a cheap single external casing as a backup drive via USB 3.0 and it hasn't had any issues. It's mostly quiet, sometimes with the long transfer sessions it can make noise but nothing like performance drives. Hope it lasts me the years to come that I expect it to.

Short Warranty - Died right after 7/19/2017 8:16:24 AM

Pros: Cheap for 8Tb

Cons: I have three that have died and they have a short warranty so I'm left with $600+ of paperweights.

Overall Review: Look elsewhere or get smaller drives. These are too new.

Excellent Product 4/30/2017 1:28:43 PM

Pros: - Purchased at end of 2015. It’s May of 2017 and the product is still going strong
- Works for my needs.
- Good price, even better on Newegg sales.

Seems reliable.
Current_Pending_Sector : 0
Offline_Uncorrectable : 0
Reallocated_Sector_Ct : 0
Power_on_Hours : 9020, or roughly 1 year.

Cons: No cons for me.

Overall Review: I will be purchasing another.
I would recommend this product others.
I’ve heard bad things about all hard drive mfgs. I’ve even been burned by one before.

As always, ensure you have a backup strategy that works.

I did not measure the performance of the drive, but it was being used as part of a local hot backup so I did not care about the performance. All I wanted was high capacity reliable storage.
