Great Video Hard Drive

Pros: Low Cost per TB, Reliable, Quiet, Great Warranty

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Purchased to replace my DirecTv external hard drive which was a Purple 3TB drive I purchased 4+ years ago. While I don't plan to need it, WD has an outstanding warranty program and that alone makes purchasing this drive over other brands well worth it over possible other lesser drives.

Remember, this is not a data drive, this drive was optimized for video content, meaning that if data cannot be retrieved that it will skip the data in order to continue to provide video content, which a viewer would likely not even notice occurred. If you put data on this drive and data could not be read then we call this a very bad situation. Buy your drives smart.

WD Purple 2TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive

Pros: Arrived in half the time they said it would take, tested it with Speccy, its a perfect drive with zero hours on it, meaning genuinely brand new.

Cons: None to date

Other Thoughts: I would definitively buy from this seller again.

WD PURPLE 2TB SURVEILLANCE HAED DRIVE

Pros: Does what it is made for.
Handles my 3 camera set up easily

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Ran this three days on a three camera system at 1080p and it didn't even fill it up after three days. I would feel secure leaving this running and only stopping it if something happens. 2TB is plenty big enough for my needs and playback is wonderful. This will last about a week in my system without overwriting previous recorded writes. That is plenty long enough for me.
Now if I needed to let it record longer than a week 2TB would not be enough for 30 days it would take a 6 TB drive. But in my business I am rarely gone longer than 5 days at a time. Low power is just a plus. 9/19/17 edit. So I have used this since the end of august and I have to tell you it is so silent that I cant even tell it is running I went thru some of the video to see the quality compared to last hard drive I was using and even the quality seems better. Will update when I catch someone doing something they shouldn't be.. UPDATE now it is 03/1/2018 and still running strong.

Perfect for it's intended application

Pros: No noise as far as I can hear

Works fine in our HIKVision DS-7204HGHI-SH

Handles 4 cameras just fine

Slightly faster than equally priced RED drives

Really good desktop performance for a 5400 rpm drive

Cons: None really. Performs as expected without issue, typical from western digital.

Would have been nice if it came with a SATA cable.

Other Thoughts: Pricing is right in line with the performance. Faster than blue, but slower than black. It's priced the same as RED drives, but running a quick HD tune benchmark shows it a little bit faster.

Performance in the DVR is fine. No issues. I'm only running 4 cameras 24/7; Western Digital claims it can handle 64 at a time. Using this to expand the capacity so we can keep recordings longer. It's working great for this purpose.

If your DVR absolutely has to work, do not just throw any old drive in. If there is an incident at the office, and the boss man comes to me and asks for the video of the incident, saying "it skipped a few seconds, the hard drive was buffering" will not be an acceptable answer.

Great drive for the purpose -- just needs more capacity

Pros: The single greatest upside is how relatively inexpensive it is as a 5400 RPM 2TB drive intended for continuous write of up to 64 cameras with simultaneous reads.

ATA streaming support effectively allows user configurable formatting of the drive into zones to better facilitate continuous writes with simultaneous reads to minimize seek time which could lead to a cache burst scenario and dropped frames as a result.

Residential configurations, which often consist of write often but read rarely configurations, are served extremely well by these drives, since they’re intended for commercial use with many writes at once and simultaneous reads for video playback by active monitors. So, whether you’re residential or commercial, these drives offer improvements over standard desktop drives at a price point that’s reasonable for either class.

Finally, from a technological standpoint, these drive is designed for constant 24/7 usage in less than ideal environments. Surveillance systems often lack the ventilation/cooling of server racks and are often found in location subject to a lot of vibration. Thus, these drive incorporate some of WD’s anti-vibration technologies to ensure heads remain in the intended location while being able to withstand locations lacking robust environmental controls like HVAC.

Cons: The one primary drawback to this model is capacity. Modern cameras capable of 4K H.265 encoding in a 4 camera system with just 5 days of storage comes to over 16 GB. So a 2TB drive won’t get you very far. Even using 4 cameras at 1080p and H.264 encoding for 5 days requires about 3 TB. So, unless you’re running super low-res tech and/or 2 cameras or so, you’ll need a larger capacity drive. Fortunately, they offer them up to 10TB.

Finally, Western Digital’s standard 3 year warranty applies here. Personally, I feel like 3 year warranties on storage devices should be the bare minimum for commercial drive intended for 24/7 operations in hot environments with lots of potential for vibration. It would be great to see a 5 year warranty offered for these.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend the drive for older or more modern systems depending on the number of cameras and their resolution/encoding. I would even more enthusiastically make a recommendation upon understanding the cameras and technology in the desired system -- as I believe more capacity is likely needed, especially for multi-camera 4K H.265 30 fps cameras.

Quiet and seems to be fast, at least as 7200 rpm that it replaced.

Pros: I used it as a storage for media server. So far so good. I've consistent write over 25MB/sec on USB 3 port, but it is slightly more than I had with 7200 RPM external Seagate disk that it replaced in the same enclosure.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: At that point I can recommend it and would buy it again. I would be able to say more in a few years.

Impressive in every way.

Pros: I have four camera servers running 24/7 three of which have been running for longer than 10 years. I have been through a lot of hard drives and hardware over the years. I added the fourth server recently using a Geovision GV600-16 CH PCIE card. So between the four servers at home and work, I currently record 21 cameras 24/7 on to my server's hards drives. All the cameras are live online and I view them where ever I go. If I want to work some more, I have the capability of adding seven more analog cameras to the Geovision GV 600. In addition I have several IP cameras up and recording. I do all this myself folks. I live in a world surrounded by live surveillance cameras. I'll be installing theWD Purple 2 TB sureveillance drive in a bit older AMD Quad core computer recording from a Lorex QLR460 PCI card using four Analog BNC type cameras. I currently have a single WD WD2003FYPS 2TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3 installed and recording surveillance video on the that computer .

What I really wanted to see when I installed the WD Purple 2TB drive into my AMD quad core camera server was the performance of the drive when accessing playback and viewing recorded video using the recording software installed with the Lorex PCI card. Could the WD Purple perform better and solve a problem I had been experiencing when accessing and viewing recorded video through my software? I had my hopes up. Over the years, I often had issues with the system locking or losing the recorded video feed from the hard drive while I was reviewing and making DVD's of bad guys doing what they do. The software will freeze up during playback of recorded video. The computer has 6 GB of DDR3, an SSD OS drive and an Nvidia 8600GT video card,. The new WD 2TB Purple is connected by an onboard SATA3 controller, so I am not able to benefit from the drive's SATA6 transfer rates with this system. I thought maybe this WD Purple may solve some of the playback performance problems. I am having.

After recording some surveillance video to the WD surveillance 2TB edition, I was able to review the video at it's highest resolution with the recorder's software and go both forward and backward at enhanced speeds. I tested like this for a while with success, but when switching cameras I still experienced a 'loss of data' error message at times while attempting to review recorded footage through the camera servers software. The problem could be due to the software's fast forward/ fast reverse being just too fast. Like when you used to rewind a VHS tape only to find it had self destructed while being flung through the motions by a super-speed VHS re-winder resembling a Porshe . I had more than one of those when I used to use VHS tapes to record my surveillance cameras. So, my idea of the new drive alleviating my reviewing failure issues was crushed. It was all hopeful thinking on my part.

Results of a couple of synthetic benchmark speed tests on the WD Purple 2TB:

ATTO Disk Benchmark:

Avg. Read: 146 MB/sec.
Avg. Write: 147 MB/sec.

CrystalDiskMark:

Avg. Read: 141 MB/sec.
Avg. Write : 140 MB/sec.

These are really impressive transfer rates considering the drive is installed on a SATA3 controller. The drive was not close to being half full at the time of the tests.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This WD drive can support up to 64 cameras.. It can host both DVR analog and NVR IP camera type recording systems. Designed for low power consumption and engineered for write-demanding surveillance recording systems . It's great WD has put so much effort into making a surveillance drive like this possible. The WD Purple series is state-of-the-art and as good as it gets if you are thinking of having a security camera surveillance system. The 8 TB version of this drive is under $300. When I can afford it, I would like to replace all my surveillance camera servers with these WD drives. These drives a great product to consider if you are planning to have a security camera surveillance system.. I would give 6 stars if I could.

Comes with WD 3 year limited warranty.

Performs Flawlessly in 8 channel camera DVR system

Pros: Easy install when replacing current drive. It is so quiet I do not even hear it running. Low power usage and runs cool. Big improvement in DVR over my current drive. No more frame drops or errors when recording multiple camera streams.

My DVR for camera system had a desktop drive installed -- not recommended. The 7200 desktop drive uses more power, runs hotter and cannot keep up with multiple streams. With a desktop drive, you can expect to replace it often since it is not designed for 24/7 usage and gets quite hot recording multiple streams. You don't want a hot drive in a DVR that does not have a cooling fan. Even with only 4 cameras running, I encountered errors and dropped frames in the videos when using a desktop drive. The desktop hard drive is optimized for reads. The WD Purple is designed for multiple streams and specifically designed for surveillance systems. The drive is highly optimized for writes and designed for 24/7 operation.

I have only had it for a week, but so far the drive has performed flawlessly. Only have 4 channels setup now but I plan on installing all 8 cameras in the next week or so.

With the large 64mb cache and firmware optimized for multiple stream writes this hard drive does what is what designed to do and does it flawlessly. The drive easily outperforms a desktop drive when recording multiple camera streams. A final note is this drive does not perform well in a desktop drive just as a desktop drive does not work well in a DVR.

Good price for a 2TB drive designed specifically for surveillance and 24 hour operation

Cons: These are no recommended for RAID environment so they are somewhat limited in scalability. Since the majority of consumer surveillance systems only support one drive, this is not an issue. You should calculate what size you need before purchasing a drive for your surveillance system. I am recording 800 x 600 at 15fps and this drive is more than adequate. I can get about a months recording with the 2TB drive.

Other Thoughts: Drive was a no brainer when installing and formatting. My DVR recognized it immediately and formatted the drive in just a few minutes. Had DVR up and recording in 10 to 15 minutes. According to the specs, it only uses about 4 watts of power. Check your DVR for hard drive support before purchasing. My DVR states it only support up to 2TB hard drives.
