10TB, good hard drive, quiet, low power

Pros: I got 5 of these for a NAS server. I wanted big, quiet, low power, and reliable, but didn't need lots of speed. These fit my needs. They were well packed. They arrived in 5 individual corrugated cardboard boxes, with shock mount padding. Then all 5 boxes were inside a larger corrugated cardboard box with air pillows. All 5 arrived intact. They all spun up. None made any odd noises. All 5 passed a smart offline short test. I'm running the smart long tests, but they'll take 18 hours.

Cons: The product description is too terse. The specifications don't list the sound level or the power requirements. I wanted these for bulk storage, and didn't need speed. For people who do want speed, look elsewhere, these are only 5400RPM.

Other Thoughts: The sticker says they use .40A at 5VDC plus .55A at 12VDC, ie 8.6 W per drive. I don't know if that's startup or continuous. I don't have any way to measure the sound level, but they're very quiet. The case fan makes more noise than all 5 of these together.

DOA

Pros: Cant Say yet

Cons: RMAing As we speak

Other Thoughts: Got the drive, bios didn't recognize it, tested another drive on the hook up works fine.
Tried WD Diagnostic Tools just in case, and not to be surprised since the BIOS didn't recognize the drive, the diagnostic tool didn't see it either.
We'll see if drive #2 works.

Manufacturer Response:
Hi Derek P.,

We regret hearing about your experience with WD Red NAS Hard Disk Drive and appreciate your time for providing the feedback. Best practice is to run diagnostics with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

"Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows":
https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=940

"Windows or macOS cannot find my drive":

"How to check if a WD drive is damaged or defective":

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Expansive Storage

Pros: Large Capacity, new lower price, NAS drive, low power usage for capacity.
Hard drive Speed Compare: All testing was done with an external enclosure using CrystalDiskMark and a direct file copy (about 4GB) to the disk from an internal SSD.

Speed comparison for reference. I have recently tested all of my hard drives that are not hooked up in Raids. This is just a small selection.

Cons: Still relatively expensive. Helium drives still new to the market.

Other Thoughts: I purchased the WD Red 10TB drives for a 1819+ NAS system. They have been installed for about a month now without any issues.
WD is my go to brand for HDD’s. I’ve been using them as my primary brand for 12 years now. My oldest working hard drives are WD.
As I have the 10TB drive in a NAS system I am unable to get true read/write speeds. I know over GbE Lan the NAS achieved 100Mb/s write speeds, which is similar to USB3.0/3.1Gen1. So the drives do not slow anything down.
My only concerns for the new Helium filled HDDs is how long they will last, gas leaking out slowly over time. The drives with helium are too new to the market to have any real studies yet.

Outstanding value.

Pros: Very quiet compared to WD Gold drives.
Got them on sale for an amazing price per GB.
Purchased 4 of these and use them with an Intel hardware RAID5 card, read/write speeds are about 300 MB/s.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Over the past 5 years, I've purchased 20+ WD Red drives of capacity. In that amount of time, I've only had one "kind of" go bad... It started throwing SMART errors, but otherwise continued functioning. WD replaced it quickly with cross shipping and no data was lost.

Up to 10 of these now, and just ordered 6 more. No Failures Yet.

Pros: Fast data transfer, with LSI raid card even faster data transfers, media instantly loads and plays through PLEX media server, no lag or jitter with 4K media. I recently decided to upgrade my first NAS server from an Intel i7-870/16gb DDR3 to and AMD Ryzen 1700 with 16GB DDR4 2666, right now I have these on the Asrock Tachi x370 I'll have to get a better RAID card as it was old and didn't recognize the drive sizes correctly, all the components were 12+ years old.

My Newly Upgraded NAS:
AMD Ryzen 7 1700
G.Skill Trident 2666 16gb
Corsair Hydrcool H110i (Keeps the CPU cool for transcoding)
NZXT H440 Mid Tower Case, 11 internal 3.5 bays however there is a spot at the bottom you can mount 12
Samsung 256gb SSD. (CentOS 7.5) + 10TB , I added 1 more for 11. Working on NAS #2.
EVGA 800W Power Supply.
4GB ATI R7 570.
CyberPower 1500w Backup Battery.
CentOS 7.5

Total Cost between online orders and in store was around 1400, I waited for sales, but I had saved up almost 4800, So I've begun this process or upgrading my older NAS's to newer ones. I won't need a 4th one for another year.

*see other*

Cons: Expensive, but for every 1-3TB drive I sell on online lets me by 1-2 more. Plus I just sold 5 brand new Samsung 2040UI's I hadn't even unpacked which each sold between 60-80$ I listed 6 and before 2 hours 1 person bought them now. I also sold off my motherboard+cpu+ram from my old NAS as well.

The only con is it can take 2-3 months to get the drives you need, 4k media takes up a lot of space, and I had to RMA my MegaRAID card. So i'm not getting the nice fast speeds as before, but in time I will we have a lot of streaming coming from that box.

Other Thoughts: I have another NAS I worked on that's running off an AMD 1700/8GB DDR4-3000/H110/NZXT 440/ASRock Taichi x370 as well, when the Samsung Stations would go on sale I'd use them for backup, but then they started having errors not being detected, so I had to open them up, they had a Seagate Desktop Drive, I did this for 3 of them, the drives did fail a few weeks later, So I sold what I had bought on online as well. I also recently June had a dozen WD Elements give me the same issue, wouldn't detect by USB on any machine, So i removed it from it's case because the warranty was long gone, and inside a WD Red, plugged those in, that NAS so far this year has transferred 180+TB of data and shows no signs of any drive failure.

I am currently working on NAS #2 and #3 same parts, and I've gone from 7 NAS's down to 3 and my electric bill has dropped.

2nd one is a charm

Pros: faster than standard drive, believe it or not, runs cool, quiet,

Cons: first one arrived DOA, unable to setup raid 1 with another same drive. windows 10 would display missing volume in disk manager when the drive was able to be detected in Bios.
Thanks to Newegg the drive was quickly replaced and worked like a charm.

So far so good!

Pros: Happy with the 4 that I ordered and so far they are working in my Synology DS918+ with no issues. I was concerned with having a DOA with an order of 4 and dented shipping box but on the inside, each drive was packed in its own box/support with no damage.

Cons: Non at the moment, working like a normal large drive.

Other Thoughts: Raid is built, loading them up and will report back if anything fails within the next few months.
