need to reformat to run on ac or plug & play?

If by "ac" you mean "Mac," yes for me it was "plug & play" with my new Mac Book Pro—either as as a backup destination using Time Machine or to copy anything else. No formatting was necessary. I ignored the option on mine of downloading "Discovery" for either Mac or Windows. That I don't need. Hope this helps.
