It works

Overall Review: Didn't realize I was out of SATA ports when I ordered it, but once I added a PCIe card to support it, it formatted and showed up as expected in Windows 10. Transferred my media files to it, and now my media/backup disk is just backup, with adequate space.

Typical WD Quality

Pros: In the last few month's, I have purchased four WD drives (2-2tb; 1-3tb; & 1-4tb) All from Newegg.com. Can't understand why customers are having problems with the warranty. All four of my drives have kicked back good warranties. NO questions on the warranty length either! No real problems with drives

Cons: NONE to speak of yet! I have only lost one WD drive in the 20+ years of PC assembly!

Hello Jose A.,

We're sorry to hear about your user experience with WD Blue Desktop internal hard drive and thank you for bringing this to our attention. There could be a few reasons due to which the drive may be showing errors on the computer. It includes bad sectors, SATA port cable may no longer be good or the partition of the drive may be corrupted due to any malware.

It is always recommended to run an extended test on the drive using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows and check for the analyzed result for the types of errors it shows. You can refer to the link mentioned below and follow the instructions to test the drive using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows.

Bought in 2016, getting SMART errors now.

Pros: Cheap
Low power

Cons: SMART errors after 3 years of use.

Overall Review: 2 of these 3 years ago for a NAS and they are still working good, just one of them is showing smart errors. I'm going to keep it running until it totally fails which hopefully is a bit longer. I never had a WD drive fail so far.

Hi Anonymous,

We regret hearing about your experience with WD Blue drive and appreciate your time for providing the feedback. Best practice is to run diagnostics with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We have placed a helpful link below providing more information for your convenience.

"Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows":

A S.M.A.R.T. failure indicates that your drive is at risk for imminent failure. If your drive has failed S.M.A.R.T. and you are still able to access your data WD recommends creating a backup of your data as quickly as possible. Once backed up, you should replace your drive.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Explanations for some of the failures, speed and other.

Pros: Western Digital - the higher quality maker of internal (platter/not ssd) hard drive market.

Cons: Like the lottery you won't always get a perfect drive, there is a margin for failure, or higher DOA (especially new designs - much like new GPU's like the RTX 2000 series). So research before you rush into buying with tips listed below.

Overall Review: Warnings: NOT a fanboy or WD employee or paid/compensated in any way and this ignores SSD. Due to posting rules, cannot give url/businesses.

DOA is a universal occurrence for any internal 3.5" hard drive. Yes some do have higher rates. Before buy, get reviews from reputable sites and not from the seller or maker. A site that starts with an A is great starting point, I do factor in Newegg reviews but not without other input. Use a Pc part picker/others sites reviews help to say if drive is reliable or not. If high doa rates, could be seller got bad batch, mishandled by seller or delivery company. Whenever you break in a new drive it is always best, in order to deal with any DOA issues is to keep everything backed up or clone to another drive of equal or greater size when possible. Also remember if you get a replacement from the same store you purchased it at, there is always a greater chance that it could be another damaged drive, so always be aware. Ask for the model made in a different batch/date or country.

To find out just how old the drive can be, visit site that starts with an "A" for example so you can see the estimated age (scroll down and usually in the bottom right area you can find when it first showed up on "A", giving you an idea of the age of the unit, but don't take it as final word.). Visit Western Digital website and see if the model is listed as the current model, normally blue, red, black, purple (green is no longer part of lineup)

Performance. The blue and Black at same size. Black drives cost more because it is faster, usually running 7200rpm, larger cache, highest grade parts so a 5 year war. The blue is cheaper as it normally runs slower, 5400rpm = drop in speeds, so it will be slower. It also will have a smaller cache and the parts aren't the highest grade you would get in the black drive (yes some dispute it, but look at it this way, a GM sedan versus a BMW sedan class. BMW will have more higher end parts, but I am diverting) however the parts still meet WD quality standards. The blue will have the shorter warranty as well for many reasons, the price, what WD imagines the wear and tear on this to be, etc.

Do drives always die on the warranty date, sure it can happen, however it is not something built into the drive, every drive works different. I have WD and Hitachi (which is owned by WD) whose drives are now 7 years old, past their warranty and still performing great. Sort of imagine the binning jackpot you hear about with Intel CPU where you might be lucky enough to get one that can really be overclocked higher than the average for the model. Hard drives are just like that. WD will build to the quality and standards however the life is all dependent on what you do with it, the environment, the heat, the time it is in use, has it been bumped around/dripped, and so there is no way to be able to know your drive will give you 3 years or 7 years of performance. BTW my Hitachi is my boot drive, so 7 years of a boot drive is really good (remember WD owns Hitachi). Yes I have had WD that failed in less than 6 months, it really is just whether you are lucky or not and the source/seller of the drive.

So warranty is based on their results of batch testing of these drives but just means they give you a unit at a lower cost by not having to have a longer warranty.

Another thing to consider is who is the actual seller. Newegg, just like that "A" site, have so called marketplaces where other companies can list their products alongside what Newegg sells. So do your homework on the company, get reviews about them, is always crucial. I almost never will buy the cheapest from anyone, I go for the cheapest from companies I have worked with before and so I know I won't see a refurbished drive labelled as new, of a bad drive resealed as new, better handling by receiving and shipping. So the store plays a part in the longevity or early failures.

So follow some of these suggestions and you will have a better chance at a good drive. In other cases remember you get what you pay for when you buy from a name you don't know. Don't get me wrong, there are many small stores out there that are great, just that they are in a basket that might have less reliable and less honest dealers.

Rating of WD is based on there is no 100% in anything computer. The reliability and stuff only can be seen with the model not longer sold and warranties expired. Of course you want that info now, not after. If I was to tell you which drives I put the most faith and trust in, that would be Western Digital and Hitachi and indirectly SanDisk (but we are talking SSD) because they are owned like hitachi by WD. Seagate has supposedly improved, still though not as reliable and still don't offer the longer warranties on all their products compared to WD (might have changed but they also sometimes will offer an additional year or two for a price). Toshiba has been just avg. Any other ignore

Hello Dylan E.,

We regret to hear that your WD Blue hard drive did not function as expected.

As a troubleshooting step, please test the drive on Windows using our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics program. If it passes the test we recommend testing another drive bay or SATA port on your system.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Going on 2.5 years old and going strong!

Pros: nearly 19,000 power on hours and still going strong. drive is silent and performs well as long as you understand it's a 5400RPM drive.

Empty, it'll do ~170MB/s read/writes. At the time of writing this it's 87% filled and getting 105MB/s read/writes.

Cons: Only con is it's 5400RPM - but it's advertised as such and you can't really knock it for that. This is just used for extra external backups so speed isn't important.
