Question 1

Does this accomodate for lateral shift?  I need to mount a 50" plasma on it but I need it shifted a little to the left from the stud centers.

I had the same issue, the studs in my wall were not constructed evenly about the wall center.  The slots on the piece that mounts to the wall are only about 1 inch long and designed to compensate for a slightly off stud.  Lateral adjustment is made by hanging the TV left or right on the chrome horizontal bars.  If you view the picture of the mount, the black center structure limits the lateral adjustment to about 3 inches left or right of center.

Dose this product work well when being mounted on a brick wall? 
How far will it turn with a larger 50-60in TV on it ?

Any product mounted to a brick wall will need to be properly anchored,  I would suggest mounting on 2x4s anchored properly with concrete bolts.  Get the appropriate guidance on the brick wall mounting.  This product is very high quality and I had no problems mounting.  I mounted on 2x4s myself as I was mounting near a corner and did not have the appropriately spaced studs to mount into (16" apart).  The mount does have a swivel and  stretches out from the wall about 10".  A 50-60" TV will be able to be swiveled up to 15 degrees - not much, but depending on the TV, that is plenty.

Question 3

When everything is perfectly "flat" and put back up against the wall, how far does the mount stick out?

About 5-8 inches. Its a great mount but I think if you want to have your TV nicely close to the wall then try other that dont swivel or move side by side but move up down. But otherwise strength wise is great and but also you should buy lock with this rack also if you wish to buy this. Otherwise its nice and strong.

Question 4

Can this mount be used with a 70" tv?

Yes, The new TV's are a lot lighter then they use to be. When this mount came out most TV's were plasma set at 2 to 3 times the weight. The mount sets out from the wall enough to be use the tilt up and down. left and right  angle might be limited on a 70" set
