What is the depth of the mount when it's not extended, the shortest possible depth? Is the 6.5'' before or after being extended?

It's about three inches when the arm is articulated flat. This actually solved the issue I had with the stud not being in the center of the small area beside my window. I was able to move the tv in center of the small wall by offsetting it slightly with arm. I also had a slight issue with the rotation. I solved this by adjusting the bracket so that it was higher on the tvs mounting screws. This put the center of balance lower and now my tv doesn't want to rotate on it's own and self levels.
