Is there anything extra I'd need to do/buy in order to get this to work as a monitor with a Mac Mini running Lion?

Anita,  I have the tv but my configuration is different.  I have a Macbook Pro 12 inch, late 2012.  As a monitor it now displays at 1080P only.  I wrote to Accellcables, and support replied.  I need their "active" cable.  I cannot confirm operation because I have not yet received the cable. I expect it to work at 4k at 30 hz. I did not find the cable at Newegg.   But first write to Accellcables support and tell them what computer you are using.They responded almost  immediately. Maybe your computer will work as is.  Good luck.

Is the PC input VGA only, or can you connect to a PC through HDMI or DVI?

If you want to use the full 4k resolution, the HDMI input is the port of choice (I don't think the VGA input would be able to deliver 4k).  There is _no_ DVI input on this model.

Also note that 4k resolution is limited to 30Hz refresh rate, which is sufficient for most desktop work, but might be too slow for certain games.

Make sure your video card can drive 4k via HDMI (my motherboard has a Haswell processor that's supposed to support 4k @ 30 Hz, but it's never worked reliably for me, and I connect my 2 Seikis via dedicated video cards).

One more things: when you first connect this monitor to a PC, the picture will seem blurry until you go use the remote to go to the monitor's settings menu and set Sharpess to zero.

Can this tv be hung on the wall ?

Yes, the base is detachable, and there are 4 bolt holes, in the back of the TV, 20 cm apart (probably for standard mount).  You'd have to get your own mount though.

Does this have an internal digital over-the-air tuner?

Yes, it does have a tuner built in; it is sold as a TV, not a computer monitor, so while it has some drawbacks as a monitor (color gamut not so hot), it will be just fine as a TV.

Will this tv run at 2560x1600 @60hz ?

I was able to run it at 2560X1440 @60Hz with my pc,  I have nvidia Titan, honestly its the most comfortable resolution for a screen with that size, before that I used to run it at 1920X1080 @120Hz, even if I can switch it to 4k @60Hz I will not, its just too much , unless you will watch a 4k movie. I use the 4k only to watch the 4k movie trailers on youtube.

I'm looking to replace my flat screen tv because of the heat wave that comes off it and heats up my bedroom. dose this tv produce a lot of heat?

no it doesnt , this tv is worth every penny , no problems with the quality playing pc games in 4k , sound is bad and not a smart tv , other than the picture is awesome unmatched by any 1080p LEDs , i have a samsung 7000 series payed 1300 this tv is 499. but to answer your question , it doesnt generate a lot of heat  . hope that was helpful

Hello. I have to admit I know nothing about technology and apologize for my ignorance in advance. This may have been answered before, but I kind of need it spelled out for me in laymen's terms. Basically, I just want to buy a large monitor that I can use to hook up to my MacBook pro to watch movies and for more space to do work on.

1. Will this hook up to a mac book pro? Does it matter what model/year my mac is?

This TV works well as a monitor for me. I'm using the HDMI connector, which is what most TVs use now.  It also has "component" jacks (3 round connectors) that many older devices used to use.

So your question is really "does the mac book pro have a way to output one of these two standards".  Is your MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt (which is not HDMI, it is "mini Display Port").  Humm, so does Apple sell an adapter?  I see on-line others have done this, example:  Apple store, Kanex Mini-DP to HDMI 10 ft Cable, Part Number H4637ZM/A.  So just visit Apple Store and ask for adapter.

What I cannot answer is what the TV image will look like when converted from your Mac book Pro and what you want.  Apple goes to a lot of trouble to get devices matched and looking perfect.  I'm sure this will look and sound inferior to a true Mac monitor. Note: Apple says "up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display" for yours. Maybe get the adapter and try it a on an older TV first. If that image seems OK to you, then you can get this 4K 3840x2160 TV, but it will stretch you image.  Probably better to get a TV that does 2560x1600 max.

I would like to use it as a large display for my office PC particularly for big spreadsheets.  Can you somehow run "picture in picture" so I can keep an eye on a second PC displaying in a window? THANKS!

Absolutely, so long as the remote PC is running a "Professional" rather than "Home" version of Windows - details can be found by searching for windows remote desktop.

I run Linux, so the experience may be a little different on your system, but remote desktop lets me choose how big the window is - a quarter of the 4K screen lets me see everything on a remote XP machine, and leaves plenty of room to work on the local machine.
