I have a Lenovo Y500- will this drive (without the cooling unit that usually comes attached) fit into my hard drive bay?

Accepted Answer

No, it will not. This drive is too large. You need a normal laptop drive. The height of this drive is too high for a laptop.

Will this fit in my macbook pro 17 in mid 2010?

I sure it will not, for it is 15mm high, and I don't know of any laptop that could handle that. You need 7mm or at worse 9.5mm drive. There are lots of them to chose from, even SSHD types.

I use this drive for data backup, because I didn't trust SSDs at first. But now, well, they seem to likely more reliable than HDDs.

Question 3

I'm considering using 4 of these in RAID5 on an Areca RAID card in an Icy Dock ToughArmor MB994SP-4S.  It's actively cooled, but anyone with experience knows that doesn't always mean much.

Is there any chance that heat will be an issue?

I believe they will fit size wise - but these drives get hot and they do not have the 2.5 to 3.5 heatsink/adapter. I have eat problems and I do not have 4 of them jamed that close together.

I have not used the MB994SP-4S, it has Dual 40mm Cooling Fans which may or may not be enough fans to cool them - if it is enough I expect  that small fans turning that fast as going to be very loud - if this is in a room you are not going to sit in then it probably wont matter - if it is your living room - then listening to TV will be a challenge probably.
