Will the drives show up as separate volumes, or do I have to use RAID?  Can I use hard drives with data already on them (NTFS), or do I have to format them in order to get them to work?

In Windows 10 the drives will show up as separate drives. The unit will show as a single USB device with the drives mounted with their respective drive letters. Windows Explorer will show each as a separate unit when they are mounted. Drives that are NTFS format (created using this unit -OR- have been formatted from other computers) will mount without any issues. "Bare" or "Raw" drives that have not been formatted will deliver the format message from the Windows OS (as expected).

Question 2

From the pictures it looks like there are drive enclosures for the HDDs in this 5 bay unit. do the 5 drive enclosures come with this or where do I find that product?

This is a single unit with 5 slots for drives. There aren't separate "enclosures" for each drive like you are referring to. Thing of it like your average bread toaster in form.....but not by any means like function of course 😂

Does it come with the data transfer cable? If not it looks like a common printer cable port...

It comes with a USB 3.0 cable. One end of the cable (that plugs into the unit) is a "USB 3.0 Type B" plug, and the other end is a "USB 3.0 Type A" plug. The "USB 3.0 Type B" connector "looks" like the original type of USB printer cable connector, but it provides the USB 3.0 transfer speeds (than your standard USB 2.0 cable would).

Does this have persistent power?

It stays on continuously after you press the switch. Even though the disks may spin down, the power LED is still lit.

will this work with a SATA to M.2 adapter or 2.5" drives?

I have not tried this option, but I have worked with M.2 that was installed into a SATA adaptor before. If you have a standard SATA connector that works on a PC that can be seen by the computer, this unit should be able to see it. I have tried many different types of SATA drives and they were all able to be seen. If the drive was not able to be seen by the PC, this unit would not resolve that issue. If your SATA to M.2 adapter can be seen by (the PC) using a standard SATA connection, this unit should be able to see it too without any problems.
