I'm not familiar with your computer but if you're computer is already running and you're looking to upgrade the components, download CPUID (cpuid[dot]com ) and it will tell you all about the hardware you have. From there you know which types of memory your motherboard can handle.

will this ram work in a dell vostro? When i plugged it in, i got error messages and would not boot up any help would be most appropriated

Bob, there's a software called CPU-Z. This software can tell you exactly which motherboard you have installed in your computer. Without knowing exactly which motherboard your model has you won't know if the ram is compatible.

After identifying the motherboard, look for the memory or ram specs either in CPU-Z or on Newegg.  You can compare the ram with those specs to check compatibility. You're looking to see if the ram is ddr3 or not, the pin count (if guy were able to install it then your pin count must be correct), and you want o know the maximum memory your pc's motherboard can hold.

It would also help to know exactly the error the pc gives when boring to better identify the problem. It could simply not be locked in place all the way.  Also did you mix and match ram? This normally ends badly As well.
