Pros: Huge increase in storage space, production transfer test speeds are similar to the WD Red drives while in NAS, and very durable drives for extended use.
Cons: The drives are a lot noisier during data transfers! Be aware of this and plan your placement carefully. The heads seem to have more significant force and are a lot more audible than other WD RED drives I use, especially with an array of 4 of them running in concert with each other. I relocated mine to another spot and not a problem any longer.
Overall Review: WD Purple drives were a lot cheaper than the WD Red, and I don't think I would have paid the higher cost, despite the louder aspects
Overall Review: Great value proposition. I've been with WD ever since they fixed their oops back before the millennium. Application is in a 100% duty cycle streaming surveillance system (not motion event activated recording). 24/7 stream from 16 HD cameras (H.265) @ 1 MB (8 Mbps) per camera. Solid and quiet too : )
Cons: Slow, even for surveillance. Not ideal. The read speeds are even slower.
Do not even try to use it in a PC either, it is not designed for fast rear write either, its slow in surveillance and even slower in a PC.
I bought 2 and 1 was defective out of the box. I decided to cut my losses and buy different drives.
Overall Review: My alternative Pick is the WD Gold 7200 RPM 10 TB drives. They are crazy fast and even work just as fast in surveillance.
I'm not sure of the differences but the WD Golds are light years ahead of the purples in quality and speed.
