how do I scan channels after I hook up?

Go to Your TV Settings/Menu, Then go to Channels/TV Tab, You Must Put Signal Type as Antenna, then Auto Scan or Auto Channel Scan (different model or different brand will be different). If you still have trouble, reply back with your tv brand and model, so I can help you.

If I have a hdtv will this bring in local channels that are broadcasted without a cable company servicing my home?

Yes. I live about 20 miles from a metro area and can pick up all the major networks in HD that is better picture quality than satellite in my opinion. I mounted my antenna high on an exterior wall and receive about 20 channels clearly and another 6 or so with some reception interruption.
