Question 1

I know this is designed for NAS systems but since it it designed to run constant and to generate low heat, will it work for a more reliable main drive?? not much difference between the prices, or would a black drive be better for the price??  I know the speed is slower BUT we all know the faster something spins the faster it wears out the bearings and spindles right??

! am not an expert (i.e. MCTS), nor am I employed by any computer component manufacturer. But I have been using HDD since the first "Winchester" drives came out (Pre-Windows).
Just as a truck is designed to hall "things', and a auto is designed to haul "people', IMHO the RED is designed for continuous use and most likely to be used in a RAID or iSCSI setup.  As such, it is my understanding the spindle bearings are better (longer life), and the platters themselves may be of higher quality (withstand repeated R/W over years). Again, my opinion is just from years of computer use. However I think that the main reason you might NOT want to use the RED as your primary drive, is the access time - the time it takes the "arm" to get to the new position on the platter.  Couple this with the slower spindle speed means longer time to deliver data - making your computer seem slower. I love RED's and use them in our NAS and a RAID5. Just my opinion.

Does this HDD come with a Sata cable?

No, the drive comes bare.  No screws, brackets or cables.  FWIW this normal.

Is this drive new?

Yes it is new.  You should go on the Western Digital site to find the differences between this red, and black and green.  Then get the one suited to your configuration.

Could I use this in my desktop as a storage drive? Or is this only for NAS systems?

Yes you can use it as single storage drive.  I've been using the 2TB version for over a year now.

Question 5

Can this WD RED drive be used as a normal primary or secondary drive in a basic home HP Tower PC?   And is it more reliable than the GREEN offerings?

Sure it should hold up much better as the MTBF (mean time between failures) is rated higher, as the warranty goes for 3 years. the next step up would be an Enterprise rated HD as some of them go to 5 years.

Question 6

I have a Dell E510 that won't start up, hard drive test failed.

Will this work in its place? It seems that there are so many choices.

I don't know the exact specs on this drive. I had a WD black 1TB go bad in a raid set. WD recommended the RED series for NAS and raid so that was my deciding factor. The WD Black is the faster but louder version. Then there is Blue and Green. Read up on the differences to help make your decision. WD did send me a replacement drive for the one that failed. Online customer service was quick.

I am setting up my own DAS backup system.  It says it is configured for NAS.   Will this Red drive work well for this application?  Thank you.

It will work. With that said, NAS drives are built for constant access. If you are going to use it only for backups and not doing round the clock backups then you should pick a drive with at least 7200RPM.

Hi,  I am waiting to purchase two Red 1T for my NAS.  I don't have a huge amount of data to deal with but like everybody I am looking for reliability.

My question to those who received DOA drives or early failures.  Were the drive(s) packages adequately?

Many of my on line orders were packed with the item in the bottom of the box and some bubble wrap on top. (from multiple on line stores).  I believe this is inadequate and may be a/the reason for many failures.   If you have had a DOA or early failure that was packed well then I would rethink my drive choice.

What is the rpm?  I am looking for 7200 rpm.  If this product does not have, can you recommend one?

IntelliPower is a power saver technique that varies the drive's speed so it is not a fixed 7200 PRPM.

The Pro series of this drive is a 7200 RPM drive and may be somewhat more expensive.
