Drive failed after 3 months use, non raid operation. 8/6/2020 2:02:33 PM

Cons: This isn't a SMR issue. Using the drive as generic storage (no raid, single disk) and in the middle of a file transfer Windows (10) says the drive isn't there anymore.

Boot into bios to see if the bios sees the drive (IE determine if the issue is a software problem).
Bios doesn't see it. (so its a hardware problem)

Open case, check cables, none are loose, reseat them all anyway. Check if bios sees the drive again. Nope.

Take the connections from a drive the bios does see (an older WD red 4TB) and connect them to the suspect drive (verifying if the cables are the issue, both power and data).
Check bios again. Still doesn't see the drive. (cables aren't the issue)

Thoughout the open case portion, I keep hearing a squeak at a regular interval (2-3 seconds between chirps) that I know I have never heard before, and I know isn't normal.

And sure enough, its coming from the drive in question.

I have video of the drive running that the squeak is audible on, for whoever from WD wants to see to assist in either a fix, or a replacement drive being delivered.

Overall Review: This is the fastest way I know to get their attention, and get a resolution.

Obviously I want to retrieve the data on the apparent failure, though I know that may not be feasible.

Knew what to expect and got it 8/2/2020 11:31:35 AM

Pros: - lowest price with shipping
- direct replacement for old drives

Cons: - none

Overall Review: Needed 4TB drives right away to rebuild a NAS. Wanted these, and found the best price at Newegg.ca, once I factored in shipping. (Better price elsewhere, but only location with stock was a 3-hour drive round trip, so it made sense to ship.) Fast delivery (faster than promised date, actually.) Easy installation, working flawlessly so far.

Says SMR right there in the title! Pay attention to what you are buying. 7/27/2020 8:02:09 AM

Overall Review: Bought the drive for an archive disk, data that I don't modify. You might get some slow response time when overwriting data or making frequent changes, writing new data proves to be around the same performance as non-SMR.

Do some research (away from newegg reviews) and make an informed opinion.

Great drive 7/25/2020 8:10:11 AM

Pros: Can’t go wrong with WD drives, I use Black in all my computers and the Reds are great for NAS.

Cons: Nothing.

Overall Review: Yes, I would recommend WD drives.

A pair of these working well in my Synology DS718+ 6/25/2020 2:40:11 PM

Pros: Plug and play! Snapped right in, a pair of them, no strapping options needed. This is the purpose built solution for NAS storage drives. My server seems to like them.

Cons: The packaging is outstandingly protective, and will probably last forever in a landfill. Should be recycled/reused by manufacturer.

Overall Review: I would recommend these for your NAS.

Do Not Buy the EFAX: DOES NOT work even in a Storage Pool 6/2/2020 4:09:29 PM

Pros: 3 year warranty

Cons: I discovered this model is also bad for use in Microsoft Storage Spaces Pool. DO NOT BUY THE EFAX .

Overall Review: If you insist on buying Western Digital Red Drives, make sure you get the EFRX.
