Does this antenna work as well as it claims? If it is that small then why don't they just build the antenna into the TV?

It works very well. Use it on a TV in our bedroom that is an addition with a lot of metal extrusions. We have tried many antennas, including those flat ones, but we could only get two or three channels from the local towers which are about 35 miles away. With this antenna, we now get 27 channels. We don't have it on top of our TV, we placed it on top of a closet cabinet basically perpendicular to the TV.  We did that before we scanned the channels observing where the best reception was. The antenna isn't that small, but it is compact. If it was built into the TV, we wouldn't have been able to rotate it for the best reception. Why buy a TV with a built-in antenna and pay more when you'd probably buy a different antenna anyway?

What are its physical dimensions, specifically, its length? How small a TV will it not overhang the ends of?

Accepted Answer

The antenna is 18" wide and the curl that sits over the top edge has about an inch wide gap. If the TV is wider than 18" it won't overhang.
