The Inspiron 13 5310 storage type is rated for M.2 2230/2280 Gen 3.0 x 4 solid-state drive. The 980 Pro is a Gen 4 SSD, but is reverse compatible so it will run on the Inspiron. However it will simply downclock to the speed of the M.2 slot it's in. That said, you might want to look at prior Gen 3.0 M.2 SSD to see if you can save some money with a lower cost such as the 980 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 3.0 x 4. Alternately, the 970 EVO PLUS M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen 3.0 x4. I should also note the Inspriron 13 5310 is limited to no more than 2TB for the SSD. Your best bet is to Google the specs and do some research before you buy or best case contact the manufacture of the laptop you want to upgrade and ask them.

Is the heatsink option required if your motherboard does not have a built-in heatsink?

Requiered no, recommeded yes.  NVME PCIe 4.0 get hot, specially when transfering files, so a heastink will help not to throttle.  If you feel confortable, there are tons of aftermarket heatsinks that will be better, but a matter of preference.

It's not a bad idea. Many motherboard have a heat spreader that is removed and then installed on top of the SSD with a foam-like material known as a "thermal interface material" that contacts the SSD and facilitates heat transfer away from the SSD. If your motherboard does not have this, then I'd personally use the SSD with an integral heatsink to better carry the heat away from the SSD. No doubt will give you a longer product life and/or better performance.

My mainboard has a heatsink for these, must I remove the top label?

No, do NOT remove the label. It acts as a heat spreader for the drive. You can safely place the MB heat sink on top of the label. Also, in case you didn't already know, make sure to peel the protective film off of the bottom of your MB's heat sink (I'm making an assumption that there's a thermal pad there).

I have one installed, I just do not have the heatsink on the drive. I am looking to see if Samsung will provide one.  I have not used the drive other than installing it inside my ps5, formated, and recognized by the system.  Once you place a drive in the PS5 and power it back on. It will not let you continue unless you choose to format the new drive.  But the format took less than 10 minutes, maybe 5, I walked away thinking it was going to be a long time.  Nope, super-fast format. Not like the PS3 and PS4 formatting times.

I am having trouble with getting samsung magician to recognize the SSD. I want to use Magician to clone my hd and replace it. Does anyone have suggestions?
I have initialized the SSD and formatted it I can see it in file explorer. I have windows 11 my bios is updated, I dont have raid saving turned on. It shows the PCIE adapter I am using in Magician but not the HD.

My laptop, HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec2xxx, currently has a KINGSTON OM8SBP3512K-AH as its internal SSD.  Will this be compatible?  So far it looks like it will but I'd like to get a second opinion if possible, thanks.

Can't answer your question. But this particular model is associated with older FW causing complete failure. If you do purchase this model, just ensure it is updated with the latest FW issued by Samsung.
