Will this work with the asus z97i plus mini itx motherboard?

It will only work,from a sata connection not the M.2 slot. The M.2 slot only supports SSD's that are tied to to pci express. Newegg has these also.Most of the M.2/pci e ssd's work as a storage drive & may not allow booting A operating system.The Plextor M6e PX-G256 M6e M.2 2280 256 GB, Will work as a boot drive as well as storage, you might want to read Neweggs reviews on this one. Please keep inmind This M.2 is fairly new & many new products are sure to follow.I hope this helps you.

I used the M.2 Samsung Evo 850 in a desktop build. M.2 SSDs are more like open circuit boards and I doubt that they would replace a laptop hard drive - they fit into special slots in the motherboard.
     You can use a different form factor - the 2 & 1/2 inch; Samsung makes Evo 850s in that size (enclosed sort of like a hard drive).  Search the site for SSD form factor.   Hope this helps.  FG

Not sure if it will work with that system.  Asus has a great tech support web site.  This is the M.2 format and most new MB will support the M.2
I did check the web site and it does say that it supports the M.2 SATA format.  Here is the link at ASUS web:

Are there any problems installing Windows 7 from a disk on to this?  I've read the sm951 m.2 has to be done from a usb drive.

I did not have any problem installing from Windows DVD install disk. The Samsung 850 SSD I bought was installed into a Intel NUC and I used a External USB DVD drive to install Windows.

Using a USB drive to install Windows is just an option to use if you do not have the means to use an actual DVD drive. I have done it both ways. It just takes less time using a DVD drive as you don't have to go through the process of preparing a USB thumb drive for Windows installation. The instructions for using USB thumb drive are available on Microsoft's web site. Hope this helps.

My ASUS Z97 Pro motherboard requires a type 2260/2280 M.2 device. There is no mention of the type in the specs, description or title for this m.2 device. Is it a type 2260 or 2280?

Is this compatible with GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 motherboard? If not what Solid State Drive will?

No, you need to go with a Sata SSD or a pci card. Or a mother board that supports M.2. If it does support M.2 it should hopefully have a number after it, like this has "2280", that number needs to match the SSD. Also, if it does, make sure the Wifi is not using the slot.

Why does it say "vertical" when many slots have it laying horizontal?

Vertical refers to the specific technology used.  3-D Vertical means the cells are arranged vertically instead of horizontally.  Note the "V" in the following section from the overview represents vertical.
