Do SSD Drives need to be Defragged?

Accepted Answer

No, and they ordinarily should not be defragmented.  There is little performance gain to be had, but extra unnecessary wear on the drive from doing so.

Question 2

Why are some SSDs verticle?  Is there some advantage to mounting it verticle? Is there compatible brackets for verticles? My computer has horizontal mounting brackets built in, will these verticles work horizontally?

The orientation of SSDs is irrelevant. There is no advantage or disadvantage to vertical mounting, other than convenience in a specific situation.

Unless there is a localized heat source that will raise the SSD temperature many degrees, mount them anywhere convenient, via any means. Most SSDs, including Samsung, produce very little heat of their own.

SSDs can even be mounted to holes you drill in some accessible location on the case (before the components are installed, to avoid metal chips shorting out your system). I have mounted an SSD to the case floor occasionally, and other times to the back of the motherboard plate.

If mounting an SSD with holes drilled on a flat surface, use a few fiber washers under the SSD at each mounting screw to create clearance from the case. You will need some clearance for the connectors.

No it doesn't need to be mounted vertically. 
The term vertical here is just used to highlight the internal structure of the memory. Rather than storing data in only 2 dimensions, data is also stored vertically for a certain number of bits. This increases capacity without needing to further reduce the circuit size.

Question 5

I plan to use this drive as a storage drive in my Alienware M18x-R2.  Will the drive function well for this purpose?  I already have a 512GB Samsung 830 SSD for my boot drive.

I promise you, it'll do everything you want/need and a whole lot more. I also have a gaming computer. I had it hand built last year for $4350.00. I just put this drive in as my primary hard drive. Increased boot time as well as res!ponse times. You cant go wrong

will this fit a laptop?

Different types of Laptops use slightly different hard drive sizes, especially the new ones.  So one has to check what type of hard drive your existing computer takes.  If it uses Sata interface and can fit a standard 2.5 mm sized hard drive then yes.  These are standard notebook sized hard drives but newer laptops can use smaller sized drives.

Is this compatible with Macbook Pro 14C1514 model?

14C1514 is a build version of the OS X operating system, not the model # of your actual Macbook Pro, so that's not enough information to say if this SSD is compatible with your laptop or not. Look for the model number on the case of the laptop, it will likely start with 1 letter and 4 digits, like A1398 for example.

Hello everyone,
   I have already installed windows 8.1 on this drive but didn't install the software that came with the drive. Can I install it after windows 8.1 was installed? Will I loose any data?

I have this drive installed on my Windows 8.1 Pro laptop which originally came with Windows 7 Ultimate.  After the upgrade to Windows 8.1 PRO on my new Solid State drives, I was able to install the "Samsung Magician" software application without any problems.  There has already been one update to the application which also installed flawlessly.

Can this internal SSD be used as an external SSD?  If so, what storage case do I need?

Any 2.5" enclosure should work. Best results would be with a USB3 or later. I actually installed mine in a WiFi external HDD enclosure for use on photo shoots, and it works great.

Can I use this as a boot drive as well as storage? z77 chipset, win10 64 bit.

I have used it for both - and booting off of it makes startup very quick.  With that said, I am not familiar with the z77 chipset to say that it would work definitely.   I used it to boot on win10 on an older laptop (Lenovo 2011 W520) and it worked fine.
