Yes, it just needs to have a SATA input for the hard drive - this is by far the most common standard hard drive input. Unless you have a very old motherboard with only UATA/IDE inputs I would almost guarantee you have sata inputs.

What does the vertical mean? When I mount the SSD does it have to be mounted in a vertical position? Or will mounting it flat work as well? Thanks

The vertical refers to the actual structure of the tiny memory cells in which the data is allocated onto. This has nothing to do with the mounting of the ssd. Vertical NAND (aka 3D NAND) is a memory cell in which rather than placing the cells in a planar construction on the die, they made it so that it has ridges and the newly created surface area is allocated with more memory units, this allows for higher density memory.

can I install the Samsung 850 PRO in my desk top?

Just as you would with any other disk drive, though some might prefer the extra hardware that makes installation of a 2.5" drive into a bay that made for 3.5" drives (the normal size of mechanical hard drives in a desktop).  These SSD drives are fairly hardy, I have mine (two, actually) sitting on the bottom of the case.  It works for me.  In any case, all that's required are the data cable and the power cable.  So, yes, you can easily install any SSD drive into a desktop.

Nobody gave you the technical difference answer. The difference is the PRO uses MLC NAND and the EVO uses TLC.  There are three types of NAND currently out; SLC, MLC & TLC. This has to do with the amount of bits stored in each cell. SLC is 1 bit per cell, MLC is 2 bits per cell and TLC is 3 bits per cell.  1 bit per cell has 2 voltages to change the information and for MLC its more and TLC, MUCH more. This basically means that SLC is the FASTEST, best latency and has the best endurance but also the MOST expensive, second is MLC and then TLC. TLC is inherently more risky. This is why the PRO can have a 10 year warranty. Because it uses MLC.     Whether you notice the difference in the real world with your usage is another matter.

This hard drive works great in a desktop install. The only possible down side is that it doesn't include a 3.5" adapter. However since most new cases designed today seem to be putting at least one mounting point for a 2.5" drive you might not need an adapter. If you do need one, Newegg also sells adapters that will hold one or multiple 2.5" drives.

do I need to buy anything more to put this 256 GB into my HP desktop PC runing Win 7 pro?

You'll need a Sata 3, 6 GB/S, port to fully utilize the capabilities of this drive. It is backwardly compatible with Sata 2, 3 GB/S, and Sata, 1.5 GB/S, but will be restrained by the limits of the Sata port. Also, if you plan on migrating the data on an existing boot drive to the 850 Pro you'll need a Sata to USB adapter cable. I recommend that you back-up your existing drive and then doing a fresh install of your operating system.

I have an old motherboard, a Tyan Tempest i5000xt, can I install two of these drives into my system? I would like to use one to run the OS (Windows 7) and my programs and one for disk cahce and page file. I am also aware that  I will only get SATA II speeds but will it work?

It will work.  I don't see the point of having two drives used in that configuration though.  If I were in your situation, unable to upgrade motherboards or add a PCIe SATA 3 controller card, I'd just use the motherboard's built in RAID and RAID-0 the two SSDs.  You'd get more overall throughput than SATA 2 can offer, while maximizing capacity.  There is no real reason I can think of to offload page file and "disk cache" (whatever that means) to a second SSD.

Is the "Pro" series really worth almost twice the cost of the "EVO" line?  If so, is it performance or reliability, or both?

I have the 960 evo now with m.2 connection so it is much faster than the 850 Pro.  If you are gaming, you may notice very little difference in load times when talking about the 850 Pro vs 850 Evo.  If the price difference is low, go with the Pro version is my opinion.  Life is short so 1 or 2 seconds makes a huge impact for me since they add up over time.  I hope this helps you decide.
