would this be compatible on an older rig with PCI-16 2.0?

I have this in a PCIe 2.0 x2 slot, it works fine... however I needed to do a motherboard BIOS update before it could recognize it as a boot drive (make sure your mobo can do that). Also, it's getting about 1/4th the max bandwidth due to the slower speed, about 850 MB/sec peak instead of the rated 2500 MB/sec I'd get off PCIe 3.0 x4. Still faster than SATA3 though.

The best way to confirm specs is actually by checking the manufacturer's website. With many of our products you can click on the "Warranty & Returns" tab and you will find the Manufacturer's contact info, including the manufacturer's website. The PRO features greater read and write speeds than the EVO, and is also rated for more write cycles.  The PRO series drives are generally recommended for high activity, performance intensive workloads.

Is this compatible with Maximus Hero X Wifi mobo?

Yes, the maximum hero x Wi-Fi z370 a.c. has a 2 pcie m.2 sockets type M which is compatible with the 970 evo.  
     Keep in mind the pcie lanes that your processor has, for instance an i7-8700k has 16 pcie lanes so if you have a gpu running in a 16x slot it will be sharing lanes with the m.2 drive.

I have a Dell XPS8930 would this be capable with the Samsung???

I think you would have to physically open the case and look to see if there is an M2 slot. Based on the Dell website, this system is M2 capable but I don't know if Dell uses cheaper, less capable boards in the lower end towers. If it has an M2 slot, then absolutely it will work.

Does this M.2 need a heat sink?  if so, does it come with one?

No, you don’t need a heat sink. However, Using one does help the m.2 run a few degrees cooler. I used one by EK for only like $15. I think I got somewhere between 3-5 degrees Celsius cooler.

Yes. It has two slots this can run in. If you use the second M.2 slot you will lose two of the six SATA ports (5 and 6). You can use a single drive in slot 1 and not lose any or use two and lose two SATA.

You'll need to give the model and year (released) to be sure. You'll also need to know how to actually open the MB Air up without damaging it (which it's different for different models). If you get that info then you'll need a way to backup your OS and files to install on the new SSD or replace the OS on the new SSD. None of these things are too difficult but they're all important questions to have answered or required to find out if this SSD will work as a replacement in your machine.
