yes, you can play dvds on here, in fact it upconverts so a dvd looks a little better than it did before. you can also play cds

No. It's only Ethernet known as 10/100BaseT. So you need a switch of some kind to give you more ports. Hope this helps.

Q!: What does a Blu-ray do?  Blu-ray players offer people the ability to watch movies in high-definition at home. As home entertainment technology expands, Blu-ray players have become so popular that they are beginning to phase out DVD players entirely. Since most Blu - ray players are also capable of playing DVDs, which most people still have, there is little need for traditional DVD players any more.

Blu-ray players have 1080p video capabilities which is the highest resolution HD that is currently available. A regular DVD player only has 480p. Originally, the players were high priced because they were a new technology. However, now the prices have been dropping as they have become more common in households. Even a player that is fully loaded with all of the available features is still likely to be affordable in nearly any budget.

Q2:  If you have a TV which has 1080P High Definition, Blue Ray is not needed, however you would have much, much better quality and viewing pleasure.  I one this particular unit and I am very happy with it.  If you don't have a 1080P HD T.V., this unit is however, backward compatible.  I would buy the blu-ray with the expectation you would be purchasing an HD T.V. in the next year to 18 months.  Love this unit, especially the feature where you can use a flash disk or thumb drive with movies on it then plug it in and watch your movie.

Absolutely it plays dvds! It will play blurays, dvds, and if you connect it to your home network via a cat5 cable, you can use such things as Netflix and Pandora. I love it so far and def think it is a good unit for the price. Hope that helps. :)

This does not have wifi.  You have to hook it up to the internet through an ethernet cable.

No, the model BD-F5100ZA does not have WiFi. The more expensive model does. Because of comments I read here I assumed this model had WiFi and discovered it didn't when I received the product. I use a long ethernet cable to connect through my computer router so I can use NetFlix and Pandora.

Yes it upconverts regular dvds and plays them just as well as blu-rays.

Can I install more samsung apps to this player then just the few that are pre-loaded on the device?

The applications on this player (YouTube, Netflix) work just fine.  Unfortunately, the user cannot install more apps unless Samsung releases an app patch for the units flashware.

Samsung also released a software patch last week for this player, and it's still working great! And the user interface along with a few glitches have been fixed.  Other than that, you're locked in to the above apps.

If you want a device to play movies and some games, get an internet ready WiFi/LAN ready movie player like the Roku unit.  I love mine!  Use the DVD player for movies that aren't available online or movies you own. It does a great job of increasing the resolution for your T.V.

Is this a free standing "disk" player that connects direct to TV? or does it install in a computer? Or is it a device to just download content from netflix or other suppliers?  What kind of cables does it use, are they included?

Yes, this is a stand alone blu-ray player/DVD player/Netflix streamer, etc that connects directly to a TV using an HDMI cable. You can use an Ethernet cable to link to the streaming services like Netflix/Hulu. It is not a device installed in a computer, even though it's small size can make it look like you can. The power cable is the only cable included, however if you spend more than ten bucks on an HDMI cable, you've spent too much. Hope this helps.

How do you stop the player and resume playback after you've turned it off?

Bought this model as a gift, but if it's like my other Samsung, it will generally resume playback from where you left off on its own once you hit play (my Philips does the same). If it does not, go into the chapter menu and pick up from the beginning of the chapter you left off at manually. You should be able to find the chapter you left off at  by the titles.
