You certainly can. Have mine hooked up for the same reasons. Works great, just be sure to use a really high quality high speed HDMI cable and you will be pleased with this products performance. And of course purchase it from Newegg !!!

Does it play regular DVDs?

Yes, all Blu-ray players will play DVDs as it is part of the Blu-ray standard. This Samsung model will also upconvert 480p DVDs to 1080p if you have it enabled and connected over HDMI of course.

Is this item brand new or refurbished?

The one I ordered and received was brand new. Works perfectly and is a vast improvement over my old DVD player. Wi-fi capability is well worth it.

The Web-Browser is said to be "Full" does it support Flash? will the unit play a full video from YouTube from the browser, (or other full length movies from the browser) without running out of memory like the Samsung smart TV's?

I don't know about Flash, but you can play any YouTube Video and I stream movies from Netflix all the time.  It's a regular browser; it's just clunky because there's no keyboard or mouse.

Don't know if you still need to know but here is info straight from the owners manual that came with product:
Power Requirements: AC 110-120V 50/60hZ . If you want to use in Europe, for example, you would need a converter which is available from Newegg, Steren 910-010 International Voltage Adapters is just one the egg has but others available. Hope this helps!

The blu ray player itself works great, plays in full size to my screen however when I start netflix the screen shape is all different and almost bowed, any ideas?

I think it is about the resolution. I don't have netflix account, so Ive no idea how that works. Try set up different screen mode on your tv.

Does this player include Vudu and Hulu?

yes it has a tone of apps you can download.

One thing I'm not happy about is that there is no HBOGO, MAXGO, Starz or Encore apps.

I'm trying to find a DVD player to use with a set that does not support HDMI. The current set supports only Component Video, Composite Video and S Video. It seems that all the Blu-ray players only provide HDMI output. I understand that my current set cannot display HDMI quality signals, but I'd rather get a player that can "down convert" to my current set and be capable of supporting a new set once I get one. Also, an HDMI input would be nice in order to install a Chromecast. Am I on an impossible search, or are there players that can do this?

You're probably not going to have much luck finding an affordable unit with Component or SVideo (Composite shouldn't even be considered).  There is a alternative though; a HDMI to Component cable.  I did a quick search and there are some that are down right inexpensive.
