Can this drive be connected to a SATA controller with some sort of SAS-to-SATA adapter/cable?  If so, any recommended brand and part/model number?

Accepted Answer

No,  this is a SAS  drive,  and even though it shares a similar physical layer for connectivity,  the commands and responses between the drive and controller are different.   SAS == Serial Attached. SCSI.

Question 2

Will this work in my HP Pavillion desk top which is approx 6-7 years old?

Accepted Answer

It might, but although SATA is a subset of SAS, there's no guarantee that this drive will work in an older desktop system.  Key features may not function (like NCQ, or power state control).  Look through the docs on Segate's website for more specific info and controller compatibility.

Even if it were to work, I wouldn't pick this drive for desktop replacement.  Instead, I've been using the "fusion" drives, which I've been impressed with.  They're 128 GB of SSD married to a 500 GB platen drive, and no special drivers are required to manage TRIM or other settings.  They're quiet, low-power, and about the same price as this drive.

Is this drive Dell certified?

No. Dell certified drives have Dell firmware installed. It works no problem on a Dell server but is not supported by Dell and will give a message in Open Management that it is a non-certified drive. if it doesn't load up on the array, try updating the firmware in the RAID controller.

No, this hard drive is not compatible.

You need a SATA hard drive (this one is SAS).
