can you put this in a laptop?

This is not the proper size for a laptop.  Laptops use 2.5" hard drives.  You could however buy an external usb case for this drive and plug it into a laptop.

Does it come with the SATA cable, or does that have to be purchased separately?

Sometimes a Retail boxed drive will come with some extra's like a data cable but normally when they are "bare" drives nothing extra is included.  If you are constructing a new computer a couple of drive cables are generally included with the mother board.  Also some manufactures have an extra cable inside the computer for possible expansion.  So to answer your question, Normally not included. SATA cables are generally available wherever computer components are sold.

This drive is a bare 3.5" drive and its primary application is to be mounted internally in a desktop computer or server chassis.  It can also be mounted in an enclosure so that it can be used as an external hard drive and be connected to a laptop or notebook by a a USB or ESATA cable, depending upon the requirements of the computer and the type of external enclosure purchased.

Question 4

I just asked about an HP hard drive for an HP EliteBook 2530p Core 2 Duo – 1.86 GHz.  Would this one work?  2TB is tempting, but I don't know what "bare drive" means, or whether the more expensive HP is so because it's more solidly built, making it the more economical long-term investment.

"Bare Bones" just means it does not ship with a driver disc or hardware.  But if you are replacing a disk drive, just reuse the screws.  As far and compatibility with the drive, it really comes down to the operating system--in this case, I am guessing Windows.  Both version 7 and 8 should have no problem at all recognizing and using this drive, and you can go to Seagate to download drivers if you need them.

If you are using "restore discs" to recover your system, just replace the old drive with the new one and follow HP's guide for the recovery.

There are also some very good "cloning" software that will take everything off your original disk and copy it to the new drive.  This way you have your system exactly as it was, but with a larger hard drive.  Google "cloning software" for options.  There are a lot of good free programs.  I use a program call "Reflect" made by Paramount Software UK.  They have both a free version (which I have used) and a professional version (which I also own).

i assume that a hard drive will be compatible with any PC expansion slot?

If by "expansion slot" you mean desktop hard drive bay, then the answer is yes it will fit any standard 3.5" hard drive bay that is normally found in a desktop.  It will not fit in a laptop hard drive bay which is 2.5".  By the war, "slot" is a term usually used for expansion cards such as ISA, PCI, PCIe, etc.

What is a "bare" drive?

A Bare drive contains no cables, cases, etc. Usually its just the empty hard drive. If you are assembling your own pc then you will get all the required cables along with the power supply or motherboard.

AFAIK, These are "bare drives" meaning they do not come with any cables at all. I've never received a drive from NewEgg with cables.

Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive  I bought this and can't get it to work with the BlacX p/n ST0005U. My computers just don't see it as being their are they compatible?

I have no idea what your machine is.

My drive was immediately recognized by one of my desktops (Windows 8 on Asus MB) when I connected it for formatting, then moved to another system (Intel MB w/new install of Windows 7) for a fresh OS install.

Does your system recognize the drive at all, or is the problem that your system won't partition/format the drive?

That's about all the help I can give you, I am fairly knowledgeable, but certainly not an expert.

Hi, i have a mac pro tower, quad core intel. I've never installed an internal drive in it, will this one be compatible?

If you know how to install an internal drive then this drive should be just fine.  You'll need to format it -- but it comes unformatted so that shouldn't be a problem.  As long as your mac as a spare SATA opening and power from your power supply you should be able to install it.

The easiest way to figure out if it's compatible is to crack open your mac and see what connections it has available on the mother board and power supply.  If you're using it to replace your main hard drive that should work as well, but I've never worked with macs in that regard so it will be up to you.

Question 10

I just want to upgrade my son's home PC desktop. He has an ACER that his mom bought him, and the hard drive is almost full. Will this work?

Depending on the age of your sons machine (or the BIOS), this should work just fine.  If he's running Windows XP, maybe not; if he's running Windows 7 or Windows 8, almost certainly.  Check your manual or hit the Acer website to make sure his BIOS can handle a 2TB drive, so you won't have to RMA.

A couple comments indicate that this drive "fails" or "fails often," which makes me wonder how those who reply in this manner treat their machines.  I have been computing since the long gone days of  Leading Edge 8086 pcs, and building almost as long.  I have never had a Seagate drive fail...that wasn't my fault.  Western Digital, on the other hand...  As an alternative, you might want to look into an external drive, since the issue seems to be data storage space.  That way you don't have to open the box or re-install his OS.
