Great

Pros: I bought this in June of 2014 when I was building my first gaming PC and it has been my only drive for all this time. It has never failed me once or caused me any issues. Some of the reviews seem to claim the main issue is that this drive dies but with extremely heavy usage for a multitude of so many things over the years; I've had no problems.

Cons: N/A

Click of death after 4 yrs lightweight usage

Pros: budget choice I guess

Cons: Will fail one day with your data

Overall Review: Bought in 2014, disk died in 2019 with lightweight usage (my main disk is SSD). Research tells me it is reader failure. In fact this is the 2nd seagate drive that fails me. The first one locks itself because of the faulty firmware. I still have another seagate in my case. I don't know why I chose seagate again and again, but I know I won't do it again in the future.

Anyone who buys Seagate needs to have their head examined. Second one that failed on me. Huge losses...

Pros: Big and cheap. But "cheap" will end up costing you big time.

Cons: I can't believe I bought another Seagate. This one lasted a couple years. Didn't realize it was a Seagate (had forgotten), otherwise I would have backed it up.

It just died for no good reason. Except that it is a Seagate. This one was costly. Very costly. Lot's of man-hours of work just lost in a microsecond. Writing this in the hopes that I can save others the pain. Your drive WILL eventually fail if it is a Seagate. It is just a matter of time...

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Parker V.,

We regret to hear about your experience with the Desktop drive. We’re certainly sorry you’ve encountered this circumstance. However, we’re hoping to lend a helping hand and offer some assistance which may resolve the issue. From what we understand, the drive failed after a couple of years.

In your situation, we would suggest the following steps:
Try connecting the drive to another port on the motherboard.
You may also try using different SATA cables.
Verify if the drive detects within the BIOS.
Try connecting the drive to another computer to see how it reacts.

Performing these steps can rule out a problem with the drive itself. There can be situations where the problem is related to other things which can affect the drive. Please follow the troubleshooting steps in the link below:

If the issue persists, please create a case with our technical support team so we can further investigate and explore available options:

its alright

Pros: it works 2000gb not even a full 2tb

Cons: seagate has so many rules, it seems like they want to just attack their customers
seagate will also always return a lesser quality drive if something goes wrong
how the drive looks and feels matters
you always guarantied with seagate that it will turn from bad to worse

Overall Review: customer not happy
seagate happy but customer not happy

Hello Anonymous,

We regret to hear about your experience with the Desktop hard drive . We’re certainly sorry you’ve encountered this circumstance. However, we’re hoping to lend a helping hand and offer some assistance which may resolve the issue. From what we understand, the drive is showing less capacity than advertised.

The discrepancy between how much capacity the computer shows the drive as, versus how much capacity the drive was advertised to be, can be explained through the difference of number systems. In other words, it can come down to a translation of the decimal number system, to the binary number system that operating system utilize.

Simply put, decimal and binary translates to the same amount of storage capacity. Yet, since they are different “languages” it may seem the drive has less capacity, when in reality it’s the same amount of storage capacity.

Here are two Knowledge Base articles, which explain this thoroughly:
http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/194563en

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/172191en

In regard to the warranty policy, we always return to the customer a certified product( same model as the one returned by the customer) that carries the greater of: original warranty balance or 90 days.
In case you have had a bad experience with our warranty support, we encourage you to contact our support center and request your case to be escalated to a supervisor. We would be happy to assist you.

Some clicks, fixed by firmware update.

Pros: It holds your data.
It holds a LOT of your data.

Cons: When I first bought it, it started to develop a clicking issue combined with incredibly poor performance during the clicking (usually a sign of impending failure) within a month or two. However, I updated firmware and that seemed to make the clicking issue disappear. Very odd.

EDIT: After quite a while owning this drive, it's had a few end-to-end errors recorded in SMART throughout its life. It doesn't appear to be dead, but it's never quite been healthy. I do have four newer drives from the same manufacturer of the same capacity, and they don't show any problems after a little over a year.

Overall Review: *shrug*

In spite of the clicking thing, worked fine. I'm happy with it.

Not great...

Pros: - Works for some time
- Decent performance while working.

Cons: - Was basically fried after 1.5 years, max read/write was 10mB/s and response times were consistently above 100ms.
- After 3 years of me using it, it would take 20-30 minutes to fully boot windows.

Overall Review: I would recommend some WD drive over this if you want a 7200rpm hard drive.
