Seagate Expansion 2TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Cons: Failed during the first backup job! The first drive to ever die on me during first use. I plugged it and it was recognized normally by Windows. Dragged 4 folders to be backed up, between 5 and 10 Gb each, and went away for an hour or so. When I came back, the drive was making a cyclic clicking noise, non-stop. Windows showed a Disk write failure message at the bottom of the screen. 2 of the four folders had been backed up and the drive was stuck on the third one. Very very slow response after that. Tried to reformat the drive but the formatting stopped after about 15 percent. The thing is dead.

Overall Review: I would almost not care too much except that the drive was purchased 33 days ago as a Christmas present, just past the 30 days return window. Now I will have to deal with the manufacturer directly, and will have no other choice but to get a refurbish version of the same model (for which I've lost all confidence). BTW, this drive has only 2 years warranty, the lowest I have ever seen. Seagate used to warranty five years.

Pros: Drive inside is a ST2000DL003. After you remove the internal, you have a enclosure that you can use on nearly any sata hard drive.

Cons: This voids the warranty

Overall Review: Its cheaper to buy these and take the drives out than to buy a bare internal drive. I have 8 of these drives with no problems at all from any of them. They run 24/7. Great for data storage. I wouldnt use these as a location for an OS install.

Pros: Bought this hard drive for music, and movie storage. Currently I used it to back up files from my old PC to add to my new build worked great plug and play has never been easier.

Cons: Wasn't free lol.

Overall Review: IF my internal hard drive ever bites the dust I can take this out the external case and pop it into my PC no problem.

Pros: After reading through the other posts it became clear the only issue was with the power savings feature. I simply downloaded the utility from Seagate to turn the feature off, formatted the drives as NTFS and they have been working perfectly for our server backups.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Don't get hung up on the negative reviews - they are somewhat short-sighted. Seagate makes a great product as always.

Pros: Lots of space, reliable.

Cons: The PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is just plain rubbish. that's the reason why after certain amount of data has been written on the disk, it doesn't have enough power for the disk to spin or the head arm to move and read/write info.

Overall Review: All you have to do is change the enclosure. If i had known this, i would have bought the disc only, and saved the trouble. but now you know, i've got 2 of these at home and they work just fine after the enclosure replacement. (You need to brake the enclosure clips in order to open those).

Pros: Cost is low, capacity is large. Sleep functions (default 15 minutes) are easily turned off, if needed with the Seagate Manager.

Cons: The utility needed to disable the sleep function wasn't included on the disk, and I had to download it from Seagate.

Overall Review: I found lots of complaints regarding the sleep function, and not having a way to turn it off. Since I'm attaching it to my WRT160NL to be used as NAS, I needed to disable sleep. I downloaded the Seagate Manager (http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/software/FreeAgentCN.zip) and was able to quickly change the setting while the drive was connected to my desktop. I wouldn't worry about the sleep function, and I'm not concerned with drive longevity or electricity costs so I don't need the disk to spin down or 'sleep'.

Pros: Works exactly as it should. Don't notice any excess noise than any normal external would make.

Cons: None so far, have owned for 5mo. now

Overall Review: Actual read/writeable storage space is 1.81TB 2tb in marketing terms.
