I am looking to use this for a Synology NAS backup. Are there issues using it for such a system - I see it is MAC compatible so it must be UNIX compatible?

So long as your system recognizes your USB ports (USB 3 preferred, obviously) than it should see the drive. You will most likely need to reformat it, as exFAT seems to be more unstable than other formats, but ext4 and other Unix/Linux formats should work fine.
