does this work with Linux?

You have to format a disk as FAT format to work with Linux.

I have an old I mac with Snow Leopard (MacOSX 10.6.8) and want a hard drive to use for storage of home videos I captured in digital. Can this hard drive be formatted to work with Snow Leopard?

Yes you will be able to. You can use EXFAT (allows both Mac and windows to read and write). If you’re mainly only using Mac, the recommended format for snow leopard would be ‘os extended journaled’.
