Using it with ESXi 6.0.0 (Build 3620759) Free

Pros: Bought this in Oct 2015 and its been running great. I currently have ESXi 6 installed with no issues and it sees the Intel NICs and USB 3.0. I recall having NIC and USB issues when instilling 5.5, but there are write-ups to get around it. Since I have this tucked back in my home entertainment center as headless, I use IPMI to install the OS or access the ESXi cli. That's been very helpful.

Cons: Although the IPMI is beneficial, it is a big security issue if not configured for limited access. Also, it uses Java which can be difficult to get the Console Redirection connected on my Mac. I sometimes have to start the Java applet a few times to get connected.

Overall Review: With my experience, I highly suggest this board for anyone who wants to build a home server with esxi 6 free. I wish the USB 3.0 port was in the back.

OK so far

Pros: I like the Layout, everything seems to work ok. Working well in a Freenas build with 4x2 TB SATA drives, 16GB ECC memory and intel G3258 Processor. So far so good, did some minor stress testing with Prime 95 and everything held up well for a few hours under load.

Cons: No instructions, just a quick start guide with a schematic of the board. I've built enough systems that I was able to figure out most of it. They do have a manual online, but I found that later.

Only 1 problem: the USB 3.0 Type A header doesn't work properly. I tried installing a front USB3.0 panel and plugged into the header, and only one of the 2 ports works. I tried installing another, and same thing. I narrowed it down to the actual motherboard. I've submitted a tech support ticket and am waiting for a reply. Please feel free to contact me if you read this. I'd hate to RMA the whole board just for this issue, but I'd also love to get a working USB header port. I'm hoping maybe I'm just overlooking something in the BIOS.

Manufacturer Response:
Thank you for your comment! Supermicro needs your comment to improve our quality and service. Due to the Intel C222 chipset limitation, it only supports 2 x USB 3.0. According to the specification, 1 x USB 3.0 is used for Type A port. As a result, only 1 USB 3.0 port will works with the USB 3.0 header. If you still have any question, feel free to contact us. Good Board for a Nice FreeNAS or unRAID build

Pros: -IPMI is great and is easy to use. It has a lot of customization too.
-Onboard USB header
-ECC memory support
-Pentium G3xxx series support. Great for a purpose built NAS. No need to buy a Xeon if you're not using it for VM's
-If you are building an ESXi or unRAID server it a great all-in-one solution paired with a low-cost Xeon and 32GB or memory

Cons: -Wish all the SATA ports were 6Gbps, but I got a used HBA card and flashed it with LSI firmware. Not going to drop an egg for that.
-In FreeNAS, you will see one NIC as em0 and one as igb0. Since it uses two different chipsets it will use a different driver.

Overall Review: I am using this as a NAS and SAN for my VMware ESXi lab. I would put this up against any SOHO NAS appliance like a QNAP, Synology, or Drobo.

My build includes:
-Fractal Design Node 804
-SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLL-F-O (of course, lol!)
-Intel Pentium G3258 Haswell Dual-Core 3.2 GHz (It's a purpose built appliance don't need much CPU power)
-4 x Crucial EEC Memory (CT2KIT102472BD160B)
-CORSAIR CX550M PSU
-16GB Sandisk Ultra fit flash drive (FreeNAS OS)
-8 x WD RED 3TB HDD (RAID-Z2 pool)
-Dell H200 HBA card (Cross flashed to LSI firmware)

Excellent Freenas Board

Pros: Freenas forums were not incorrect. This board has superior compatibility for VMs .. I had many esoteric operating systems running in no time and had no driver issues. It also came packaged with a signed checklist verifying the contents of the box. A+ Supermicro!

Cons: None really.. many people complain about the IPMI and BIOS needing a license key to update them. This is incorrect. If you go to the website you can download all available drivers and update them through the IPMI View software they provide. Same with the BIOS .. you just have to manually flash using a USB the "older" way. Luckily I bought this board in 2016 and it already had the latest firmware installed on it which was nice!

One of the best boards for a NAS

Pros: - Well packaged. Included documentation covered pretty much everything you need to get it up and running.
- On board USB 3.0 port (for booting from a dedicated flash drive; useful for FreeNAS).
- Been running nearly 24/7 for the last four months or so, without so much as even a minor glitch.

Cons: - My only complaint is that I wish some of the POST codes were better documented (see "Other"). TL;DR: RAM order is important to this board.

Overall Review: I put the whole server together (I was actually demonstrating to a friend how to build a PC from scratch) in one night. I got it all together, powered it up, and it hung in BIOS at a POST code that wasn't documented (by Supermicro). Just my luck...

Turns out the RAM slots are paired by bank (which are two different color slots, confusing me more) instead of by channel, and if using only two sticks, the RAM needs to be in the top two slots in order to POST (all this is explicitly stated in the manual that I ignored because I thought I knew better). After that, FreeNAS installed quickly and picked up my existing array that was plugged into the on-board SATA controller(s).

FreeNAS Server Build:
Intel Core i3-4170
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLL-F-O
Crucial 16GB DDR3-1600 ECC CT2KIT102472BD160B
WD Green 1TB (x2)
Seagate Barracuda Green 1.5TB (x2)
WD Red 3TB (x2)
4-Port Marvell 88SE9235-based PCIe x2 SATA-III Card
Fractal Design Node 804
Corsair CX430M PSU
Corsair H60 (the original version) (yes, I watercooled my server, I had it laying around; yes, it says right in the manual to only use the stock cooler; yes, it runs fine, granted with plenty of airflow)
ADATA 16GB USB 3.0 Boot Drive

Amazing Board

Pros: This is just an absolute perfect server board. It does not have all the fancy bells and whistles that more expensive server boards have but it gets the job done.
The onboard IPMI LAN is a great feature to use.

Easy to setup. Took me less than 5 minutes to install the board and parts and get it past POST to install the Operating System.

I have been running the board for 6 months now 24/7 and have not have a single issue. The server RAM for it is also great(Can't go wrong with Kingston) but that is for another review.

This board is great. Simple as that

SuperMicro RULES!!!

Cons: None

Solid motherboard with good remote access

Pros: I'm using this board for a headless home server, and the IPMI capabilities are awesome: I was able to install FreeBSD over the network without needing a USB drive or monitor.

The board is still running after about a year, and I'm happy with the speeds of the network interfaces and the hard drive connections. I'm using with with an i3, and the ECC RAM appears to work (though it's surprisingly hard to confirm this). The board seems to be solidly constructed.

Cons: The documentation is a bit unclear. There's a separate manual available from Supermicro that explains the IPMI system, but I still needed a lot of trial and error to get it working.

There are two ways to access the IPMI subsystem: client software from Supermicro and a web interface. Unfortunately, the client software didn't work when I tried to boot from an ISO, and the web interface is a bit clunky. After a number of hours of trial and error, I managed to use the web interface to specify an ISO to boot from, and I use the client software for everything else.

Overall Review: At first, FreeBSD intermittently refused to recognize keystrokes through the client software after a reboot, but that problem seems to have disappeared. I tried to figure out this problem, but there wasn't much information available on how IPMI talks to the OS.

I'm new to this area, and I'm not sure how high to set my expectations. Rating it 5 because it does everything that I need, though beware that it's not a seamless experience.
