1. Compatibility may vary depending on user's hardware configuration and operating system.

2. One Gigabyte (1GB) means 109 = 1,000,000,000 bytes and One Terabyte (1TB) means 1012 = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1TB = 240 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system and other factors.

3. Three (3) year standard limited warranty applies. The warranty brochure can be viewed online at //storage.toshiba.com/consumer-hdd/support/warranty-info.

Cheap

Pros: None

Cons: Drive failed within 6 months of purchase. Toshiba drags their feet and takes forever to issue an RMA for a replacement drive.

Other Thoughts: Try to buy a better brand such as Seagate or Western Digital if possible. I have had better success with those.

Affordable and Speedy

Pros: It is a standard laptop sized hard drive.

Storage wise it offers 1tb as a fraction of the cost of the much more expensive counterpart that would be an ssd.

The cost of this drive with the current sale makes it hard to pass up if you're not able to spend the money that an ssd would cost.

Performance wise it is on par with what you would expect in terms of your standard spinning drives.
Power consumption is pretty low which is nice in a laptop.
Temperature wise, it does not get noticeably hot like some other drives I've had in the past which is nice.
I was unable to hear the drive making any type of access noise when it's being used in the specific computer that I tested it in which also was nice, I have had drives from this manufacturer and others that were quite loud under heavy use especially in the smaller 2.5 inch form factor.

Having a 3 year warranty is also nice, means that they are willing to stand behind their product.

Cons: It's a standard hard drive, so it's slow compared to the new standard which is arguably ssd.

I can't take any eggs off for that simply because it performs at or above what is expected for this style hard drive but I still view it as a con just given the general fragility of these compared to ssds.

Other Thoughts: For the price and performance I would recommend these to someone who is unable to, or unwilling to purchase a similar sized ssd for substantially more. It's a great value for what it is.

Solid drive!

Pros: - Easy to install
- Quiet
- Low power consumption (1.5 W at load)
- Low running temps
- Reasonably priced
- Crystal mark 119/120 r/w MB/s
- 3 year warranty

I used an old laptop to test this drive with (Lenovo Ideapad Y560, Intel Core i7 720Q, 8 GB DDR3 1600 RAM. Installation was breeze, booted up and no issues whatsoever. It ran a bit more quiet than the drive that was preinstalled with the laptop only because the original drive was a Seagate Momentus 7200 RPM drive. Faster drives = more noise.

Cons: - 5400 RPM drive
- Only utilizes SATA II limiting theoretical speeds to 3 Gb/s
- 500 GB

Other Thoughts: This is a very good bargain drive to start off with. It isn't really an upgrade compared to everything else that is out on the market. The only scenarios I would use this drive is to replace a faulty drive on an old laptop or upgrade the drive on a old game console (PS3). Most performance drives on the market are either fast hybrid drives running 7200 RPM with higher caches or an SSD. There is a 1 TB version on the market as well which will suffice much better than 500 GB if storage is a priority. Overall a solid drive for basic everyday needs.

Buy big laptop hard drives while you still can.

Pros: 2.5 inch drives are a good idea when size, low power consumption and low temps beat out performance (laptops, gaming consoles, server arrays). They are very very cost efficient now.

This 1 TB drive is 5400 RPM, 8MB cache, PMR, NCQ, and has an internal shock sensor with ramp load. It always uses less than 1.5 W power. (¼ that of a typical 3.5 inch drive). Interface is 3Gb SATA. Atto 118/119 r/w MB/s. Crystal Mark 118/117. Runs very cool. Max temp without active cooling at room temp environment was 33 for me.

Choosing a Toshiba 2.5 inch drives can be confusing in that they have a couple model types labeled L200 and it is not very clear in their marketing that one type is a 7mm thick 128Mb cache 6Gb SATA and the other is 9.5 mm with 8Mb cache and 3 Gb SATA. They just seem to differentiate by calling one “slim”.

The product description on the day I am writing this states a 2 year warranty while the warranty tab above says 3 years. --> 3 years is correct for all these 1 TB drives in the US.

Performance: average. Power consumption: excellent . Cool Running: exceptional. Cost now: great.

Cons: Average performance with SATA II 3 Gb/s.

Confusing marketing with two different 2.5 inch drives labeled L200 (a thinner drive with bigger cache and a thicker drive with a smaller cache).

No serial number sticker on edge of drive to identify it from the side if you are using it in a server array.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba’s niche in hard drive manufacture historically has been making 2.5 inch form factor HDDs. (They got back into 3.5 inch drives when they bought HGST from WD in 2012.) For all sizes of hard drives they are a distant 3rd in world-wide production --but they were the fastest growing HDD vendor in 2017 with some interesting new things like 14 TB helium filled drives.

You would think laptop hard drives would be taken over by SSD’s - but worldwide laptop HDD shipments were down only 5% when compared to desktop HDD shipments being down over 16% for 2018 Q1 (and SSD’s are increasing in price)

I would consider stocking up on the mechanical storage devices you may need this year while prices are low.
Some thoughts and concerns about future HD and other storage prices reversing a long downward price trend (like RAM did):

--Hard drives are not going away when it comes to large amounts of storage space. Near-line storage shipments continue to increase. As long as hard drive production continues, HDDs should maintain at least a 10x difference in price of raw capacity vs. SSDs.
--Manufacturers are shutting down hard drive factories. Hard drives are difficult and expensive and complicated to manufacture, SSD’s are easy to make if you have the chips in supply. Just this last week, Western Digital closed one of its total of three plants. Seagate closed one of its three total plants in 2017 (in China).
Remember the hard drive supply crisis/price spike in 2011->2013 during the Thailand floods? There is still not much geographic diversity in HD production.
--SSD memory (and RAM memory) seems to be in very short supply and prices are up (the industry chip makers are very concentrated into a few players.) This has gotten worse with the Samsung NAND factory power glitch this March which ruined 60,000 wafers..
--There are only three main hard drive producers: Seagate (absorbed Maxtor, LaCie, and Samsung), Toshiba (absorbed Fujitsu and HGST 3.5 inch), and Western Digital (absorbed HGST 2.5 inch drives).
--A preferred configuration for many laptops is an mSATA SSD for the OS and a big mechanical drive for everything else.

Good all round option for laptops.

Pros: 2.5in and 7mm thick
Low Power
Runs cool and quiet
Designed for laptops
3 year warranty

Cons: 5400rpm mechanical drive

Other Thoughts: I needed to replace the 500gb hard drive on one of my older laptops and was limited with my choices. M2 was not possible and neither was a 1TB SSD due to budget. This L200 appeared to be an ideal choice. It’s a slim, 5400rpm single platter SATA 3.0gbit/sec HDD in 2.5in format and should fit most laptops. Based on Toshiba’s website this HDD uses up to 1.5W while in use, as opposed to 6W or more for traditional HDD’s, so battery life should be good for laptop users.

This was going in my old Lenovo Ideapad and rather than a clean install I used Easus Todo to clone the original 500gb HDD. After the clone, it was pretty easy to open up the laptop, replace the HDD’s and restart the laptop and boot in to windows for some testing.

Usually I like to test SSD’s and HDD’s with Crystal Disk Mark just to make sure everything is running correctly. This software can be downloaded for free online. Crystal Disk Mark returned maximum read and write speeds of 118.2MB/s and 116.7MB/s which compared favorably with the old Samsung HDD that I replaced which returned maximum read and write speeds of 81.2MB/s and 83.7MB/s Crystal Disk can also monitor the status of most HDD’s and SSD’s and showed the max and min temps of this HDD at 35C and 29C. The laptop was cool and quiet. As far as battery life was concerned I watched videos on Netflix in full screen from a complete battery charge until the laptop switched off, 2 hours 37 mins with the original HDD and 2 hours 39mins with the new HDD. However, this laptop is old and the battery definitely needs to be replaced, so I would not put much credence behind my battery tests…

While performance was slightly improved over my older Samsung drive, HDD’s will always be slower, noisier, warmer and use more energy than SSD’s due to the moving parts… However HDD’s are cheaper and can often be found in higher capacities. If you have the budget then buy an SSD rather than an HDD, if not then this L200 has reasonable performance at a good price

Affordable laptop drive!

Pros: For the price these are decent replacement /upgrade drives for laptops!

At 5400RPM with 8MB cache it is not exactly a speed demon but it gets the job done.

Simple too swap out with an existing drive or add as a secondary which is what I used it for.

Great if you need to upgrade an older laptop, or expand your storage space on a current laptop. Will also work on laptops that have a second drive bay that supports SATA 3.0Gb/s.

The L200 Series comes in three sizes, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. For a few dollars more the 2TB is a better deal if you need more storage space.

This drive is also backwards compatible with older laptops that support SATA (II) 3.0 or SATA (I) 1.5 ports. However, the maximum speed of the drive will be slower due to the lower speed limitations of the port.

3-year limited warranty

Cons: None for me, it worked fine!
