Great Value and Performance

Pros: Toshiba hard drives have a lot going for them. They come in packaging with the type of packing material I like to see with a hard drive. It's simple, but extremely effective. They come in a small box with an inflated hard drive protector that's a perfect fit for the hard drive inside of it. With this protecting your drive, it would have to be handled extremely roughly during shipment to damage the drive. Also, I like them because they're nice to store old used hard drives in them. Inside the packaging, your drive comes inside of an anti-static bag, as you'd expect.
The 1 TB variant of these drives operates on a SATA 6 Gb/sec interface, have 128 MB of cache and spin at 5400 RPMs. The noise level of this hard drive is pretty minimal, I typically can't hear it over top of my laptops cooling fan.
Using Crystal Disk Mark, AS SSD benchmarks and AIDA 64. Sequential Read and Write times averaged right around 150 MB/sec pretty much across the board on a new drive. As the drive approached full, speeds degraded closer to the 90 MB/sec sequential read and write mark.

Cons: None at this time.

Overall Review: My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 with an Intel Core i5 2520M. I got it on sale from Newegg for an extremely good price. It was a refurb that came with a 320 GB hard drive. I typically use my laptop for downloading all types of large files that I don't want to burden my desktop PC's SSD with. So the 320 GB hard drive it came with was far from practical for my use case. I needed a lot more storage, but I don't want to spend a lot on a hard drive for a laptop I got for cheap. That just wouldn't make sense. Looking at all the various laptop hard drives in the "cheap as possible" price range doesn't give a lot of options for performance hard drives. Typically, there you'll only find eco hard drives. Mainly designed for power saving. In that category, this Toshiba drive stands out. It doesn't have the max RPM you'd want in a performance HDD, but all the rest of the specs are pretty impressive. 128 MB of cache until recently has been reserved for only high end hard drives and the read and write speeds are very respectable.
I actually own and operate 4 Toshiba hard drives. I have a RAID 0 array with a couple desk top HDDs, this drive and a portable 1TB drive, which I suspect might have this hard drive inside of it. I've never had any issues with any of them so far. They're decent performing drives for a great price. Which is why I keep buying them.

All things considered I think these drives are a great value. They come well packaged, the price to performance ratio is really good and they have a 2 year warranty. I am giving these drives a 4 Egg rating. I don't really have a problem with these drives, but I just don't think they deserve 5 Eggs.

Toshiba L200 1TB Laptop PC Internal Hard Drive great for storage, okay for budget OS in Laptop

Pros: Energy efficient – less battery drain than higher rpm drives, but comes at a performance cost.
Fast for what it is, but do not buy this for speed as a primary drive. See “Other thoughts”.
Quiet for a mechanical drive.
Cheap for either budget OS or storage in a laptop. It could get you by as primary OS drive if it must.
Large storage capacity at 1TB.
Size Factor. Compatible with older and newer laptops.

Cons: None with the drive for what it is – see “Other thoughts”.

Overall Review: As prices gradually keep dropping for SSD’s you need to use one for your OS on a laptop. They always will give you a noticeable improvement difference and are a cheap way to improve an older laptop.

These mechanical drives are great for laptops with room for an additional drive.

Can you get by with this as your primary OS drive? Sure! But when mobile processing can be much more enjoyable with an SSD for that, save a little and step up if you can. Compliment it with this and you are set with plenty of storage for your personal files, music, et al.

I have no idea why they keep using mechanical drives other than they must be depleting their stock before making SSD’s the mainstream primary drive in laptops. Other than having old stock needing to get depleted, the cost is not much different to install smaller SSD’s up front now.

I always shop for laptops that are either low enough priced to afford to upgrade immediately to an SSD, or with an SSD already being provided as primary drive. SSD is typically the best bang for your buck in a laptop (or PC) for upgrading (as far as speeding it up). Soon these mechanical drives will be outdated enough that they stop shipping in original configurations and are used mainly for storage as external drives, and come in high capacity only - such as this one.

I also make use of these for ultraportable storage solutions, with a cheap adapter to hook it into USB 3.0 ports for data migration and initial program installations on new systems. I don’t usually bother buying an enclosure for them but that is a good option too for a daily use external for longer term.

Toshiba has been very dependable for me and so has this drive for the weeks I have tested it. No SMART errors, or bad sectors. Drive health reported at 100% using HD Sentinel. Temps fine.

Great way to increase your storage capacity

Pros: Large capacity drive at a low affordable price
Setup easy and quick
Designed for a multiple of system designs
Small profile, very lite and has a small footprint (same size as an SSD drive)
Can fit in an external SSD USB drive case and can function off USB 3 port or 2 port

Run well on external usb connection
USB 2.0-speed test
Read test = 42.20 MB/sec
USB 3.0-speed test
Read Test = 107.00 MB/sec

However, it is designed for a SATA 6GB/s port
Comes very well packaged
Overall a very good buy for the money

Cons: No Con’s on this item

Overall Review: I would not get this drive if you are looking for speed
I would get a smaller SSD drive
I would get this drive for a storage drive
But like I said before this drive can be used in many different configurations
At 50 bucks you can’t beat the price
Comes with 2-year warranty and made by a good manufacturer

Respectable Mechanical Laptop Drive

Pros: + Large 128MB Cache - This allows for all but large file transfers to be essentially instant - the files will go to the cache first and can wait in the write queue there until the disk spools and is ready to write.

+ Respectable HDD Performance - Obviously doesn't hold a candle to SSD's, but compared with your typical 2.5" mechanical laptop drive this is pretty good. Through real-world scenarios I saw average read rates reliably over 100MB/s and write speeds around 65MB/s, which is faster than a typical drive of this class. Short duration small file writes were particularly impressive as anything smaller than the 128MB cache transfers basically instantly (assuming the read source can keep up).

+ Quiet - Installed this in a laptop that I brought to my campus library. While there I paid particular attention to any noise from this drive since the library was particularly quiet. I could hear it when reading/writing data, but just barely - and I don't think I would have noticed without the fact that I was paying specific attention. Not SSD silent, but very quiet.

Cons: - 2 Year Warranty - It's acceptable, and fairly typical of mechanical drives these days - but it might as well be no warranty as it's very rare to experience drive failure within that short amount of time.

Overall Review: Being a mechanical laptop HDD I wouldn't trust this drive with important data. Put important things on the cloud, a NAS, reliable external storage, etc...

If you can afford it I also wouldn't recommend this drive over an SSD of similar capacity. The performance advantages are just so tangible that I see little point in not paying for it if you can afford it and if you use the laptop enough to justify making the experience nicer.

If you don't require TB levels of capacity for your drive but still want great performance, I'd just recommend getting a smaller SSD. Trade the capacity for extra performance.

That leaves my recommendation to those who require TB levels of storage, and either won't use the laptop very often or can't otherwise justify the cost of a larger SSD. For those of you who fall here, this Toshiba L200 is affordable and offers better than average performance for this class of drive.

Budget Drive

Pros: - Pretty fast for a laptop HDD but being used to desktops, still seemed slow to me
- I could be wrong but it seems thinner than most other 2.5" HDDs
- Very quiet to the point where I couldn't tell it was on

Transfer rate -
Min: 61.6 MB/s
Max: 141.6 MB/s
Avg: 108.7 MB/s
Burst rate: 120.4 MB/s

Access time: 18.7 ms

Cons: - Like most HDD, it slows down over time with longer writes

Toshiba L200 Laptop Drive

Pros: This drive is very quiet! Much more quiet than other platter type laptop drives I have had in the past including the Toshiba drive that is currently in use in my laptop, I may have to swap them permanently.
The larger 128MB Buffer is a help when dealing with the slower platter speeds of the Laptop HDD that spin only at 5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM. It is a needed power saving move for laptops using HDD over Solid State drives.
I find with this drive the performance is above what is usual of a 5400 rpm drive. The thin frame allows installation in notebooks requiring the smaller size and allows extra cooling space in others that can take a larger drive.

Cons: As usual the 5400 RPM platter speed does reduce performance a small bit.

Overall Review: I would recommend this to others, It has a good price point and storage capacity as well.

Worthy Storage Drive

Pros: - Low Power Draw - < Less than 1 watt
- Cost for storage - relatively cheap for 1 Tb
- 7 MM - will fit most of today's laptops
- Quiet - as compared to older disk drives

Cons: - Cannot compete with an SSD for performance
- 2 Year warranty - why not 3 or even 5 years?

Overall Review: To test this drive, I installed it in my aging Toshiba Satellite laptop. It originally came with a Toshiba 320GB laptop drive and Windows 7. I have since installed a HP 700 Pro SSD and migrated over to Windows 10. While the laptop is ancient by today's standards; I do not use it for gaming, it performs very well and has never given me any problems. With the SSD it is very responsive for day to day tasks. Let me add, I understand that I am not comparing apples to apples, but more like apples and grapefruits. While I do not hold high regard for benchmark tests and specs, I did run AS SSD Benchmark before installing the L200. Just to have a means to compare results. Well the difference in performance between the two drives was quite noticeable. I did not need to study test results to explain it to me. The tests did show a vast difference in access times and surely that helps to explain it. If you want to see test results, I won't bore you with mine as there are plenty of them plastered in other reviews. The boot time was back to square one. Push the power button and go for coffee, well not quite that bad. I normally put it to sleep anyway so no big deal there. The normal user who uses a regular laptop drive would be happy with the Toshiba L200 as a replacement or for additional storage.
It would make a great replacement for a PS4 hard drive. Purchasing 1TB for $50 or even less on sale seems like a pretty decent deal if you are on a budget. However if performance is what you are after, then by all means spend an additional $50 and pick up a 500Gb SSD on sale. If I had the extra slot I would use the Toshiba for added storage. I think I will install it in an external enclosure and use it for pictures, videos, music and backups. In summary, I think the Toshiba L200 1TB is a great drive depending on the purchaser's intended use and budget. If you are shopping for a dependable 2.5" platter drive for storage than this Toshiba will satisfy the day to day consumer. If it is performance you are after for your main OS, then by all means go SSD - don't settle for less!

Works very well

Pros: small, good capacity for laptop. Quality brand, fair price

Cons: None as of yet

Overall Review: This was installed in two laptops for testing one is a was a i5 6th gen 6200 u and I installed win 8.1 in about 8 minutes w/o updates and now the system boots extremely fast and makes me realize it's time to clean the old up. Very smooth as with most all hd's in this caliber but with the extra Cache over the stock and it's size even basic programs run much faster.

The other one was installed in an old $300 laptop that I decided to use this drive with Ubuntu and man fast install ( normal for Ubuntu) and with this drive and Ubuntu I think I found my new run around throw under seat laptop.

I always keep up on my desktop pc's but forget about my laptops and this drive made me realize that even laptops need some performance loving and this series of HD's will most likely be the answer.

My co-worker is ordering one today.

I did not Test in my gaming/desktop systems because that is not what these drives are primarily meant for.
