This drive will work with usb 2. When you use it with USB 2 it will of course be slower, and the light on the drive is white when you are using USB 2. It is blue when you use USB 3. It is a nice drive. The one drawback that I have with this drive is that is does not use a standard usb connector. The usb connector is supplied but if you lose it you will not be able to use a standard usb connector. Other than that it is a nice hard drive.

Question 2

I need to be able to transfer single files that are upwards of 7-10 GB in size.  I'm told NTFS file system will handle that, is it true?  Will this hard drive be able to copy my files?

It will work just fine for that.  I do that often as I need to copy large video files for transfer.  The first thing you need to do once you receive it is to confirm that it is already formatted in the NTFS file format.  If so, you're ready to go.  If not, simply re-format the drive by (1) selecting NTFS from the "File System" drop-down menu and (2) unchecking the "Quick Format" check box before clicking on the "Start" button.

i have a Dell Inspiron All-in-One Desktop would this be compatible with it?

It certainly depends on what you mean by "compatible with?", but for copying files to and from, or accessing files that are stored on it, yes.  It will work just fine as an external drive for your Dell laptop.  It can connect either via your USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connector port.  It will perform its functions faster if you can connect it to the USB 3.0 port (assuming your laptop has such a port), but will work quite satisfactorily connected to USB 2.0.

I was wondering if there is a major difference between the silver and the black one and the silver one the black one seems to be dramatically cheaper?

No difference -just color; however consider - silver ones usually go :well" with silver MAc computers , while black go with desktop; MAC people accustomed to paying higher fees...
 Other than that - no difference!

This drive connects through a standard 3.0 USB port.  No Thunderbolt port on this drive.  The 3.0 is fast enough for most needs!

I'm not quite clear on the question.  Are you asking if you can store data from another external disk (other USB, E-SATA, Firewire, etc.) on this disk?  Yes, provided you can connect both to your computer simultaneously, you can copy directly from one external drive to another.  If you are limited to a single USB port, well, you could first copy files to your local hard disk from the other external drive, then swap USB drives, and finally copy from the local hard disk to this one.

Do you need to use the issued USB cable that comes with the drive to connect with your PC? Or can you use any USB 3.0/2.0 cable?

You can use any usb 3.0 cable It doesn't have to br the one that came with thr drive. I have not tried using a usb 2.0 cable though.

I don't need the backup software. Do I delete it or uninstall it?

dont need to do anything with it. I just use it like  a USB memory stick. I bought different brand names (WD Seagate Hitachi and now TOshiba - of course on sale) they all come with software but I never click on any of them to install. Think of the software as a utility they throw in with the hard drive but you can just use it as any USB stick.

Hi.  I'm looking to use this external hard drive with my Bell HD receiver to use it as a PVR.  I require the following specifications:  7200 RPM rotation speed
Between 50GB and 2TB of capacity
Holds a single hard drive (enclosures holding two disks are not supported)
Plugs into an AC power outlet
Has a USB 2.0 connection
Has no sleep mode (cannot power down when idle).

Does this external hard drive meet these specs?  If not, can you recommend something that does?  thank you.

Runs only on the support of USB cable, it does not AC power outlet. This is a good thing! Does not power down on its own. Really, it's like a giant "thumb" drive. Currently I have backed-up my music which is just over 21 thousand songs. I have photos; over 350 full-length movies and all of my word processing docs. I have used just under half of the disk space. I recommend it to anybody who is looking for alternative storage space.
