Great drive 8/18/2020 4:47:27 PM

Pros: Bought 9 of the 8TB Toshiba N300 for my 2 Synology NASs. Also a 6TB for backup. No problems in any drive after 2 years continuous operation. One NAS suffered a thermal shutdown but no data loss.

Cons: Bit noisy and hot, Don't recommend sharing a room with a NAS. Basement is better.

Overall Review: I highly recommend these drives and have no reason to switch.

Great storage option! 8/13/2020 12:39:10 PM

Pros: -Size of storage is amazing
-HDD is fast for media content which is my primary usage (Movies and Photos)
-I do not notice noise from the drive
-Performance is snappy

Cons: -Mechanical drive, but let's face it for storage options of this size the price point can't be beat!

Overall Review: I would recommend this product and I would purchase again when my storage needs require it.

Well pleased 7/19/2020 6:02:15 AM

Pros: Bought 3 of these over a year and a month ago and still going strong. I just replaced 2 WD 6TB as I think they run slightly hotter, while the toshibas ran slightly cooler, and I like cooler.

Cons: Starting to run out of space. Gee whiz, have to upgrade.

Overall Review: Yes, I would recommend this product.

Garbage. RMA is a joke. 4 TB version 5/2/2020 6:02:58 AM

Pros: Worked for 3 months.

Cons: Only worked for 3 months. I wouldn't call that "High Reliability." In a desktop, not a NAS, so only actually ran about 2 hours a day for the 3 months. Toshiba's RMA is to send you a gift card for the amount that you paid. No replacement drive, just get your money back - on a visa card. So, if you got a great deal, you lose the benefit of the deal. Online RMA form gathers your info and when you hit continue, it just circles back to the first screen (identify your product). First call to Toshiba resulted in a disconnected call as soon as I selected RMA/Warranty option. Nice tech answered on second call, but showed the serial number as an external drive. So, now I have to pay to ship a 3 month old drive to them on my dime, wait for them to process, and then get a visa gift card for less than the cost to replace the drive. No to mention the time wasted on filling the drive and anything that I've lost when the drive failed. Took a chance on a Toshiba drive - but I'll never buy another Toshiba drive.

UPDATE: It took Toshiba over 2 weeks to send me an RMA number and an address to ship back the drive. Wish that zero eggs was an option for a review.

UPDATE: The gift card I received was less than half of the sale price that I paid. Wish that I could give negative eggs for a Toshiba product!

Overall Review: No I would not recommend. No I would not buy another Toshiba drive - or any Toshiba product again.

solid NAS drive for the $$ 4/1/2020 10:06:01 AM

Pros: - Fast enough
- Reasonable price for the speed / quality

Cons: - None I've had to cope with

Overall Review: Been running these drives in a Synology 1517+ NAS for ~3 years. Started with 3 of them, added the other 2 over the years. Performance has always been acceptable for my use cases:
- iSCSI root filesystems for ~5 VMs
- CIFS / SMB & NFS shared network mounts
- video streaming / transcoding (plex)

Touted as a NAS drive 3/15/2020 12:15:48 PM

Pros: they are compatible with Asustor NAS
they have 3.5" form factor

Cons: Noisy - perhaps the one that failed in my NAS is the only (noisy) one
Supposed to be a NAS drive, 1 of 4 lasted 5,000 hours runtime (max) and lost its mind
Investing in one more to hopefully have these all last like they should

Overall Review: I don't yet know if I'll be able to give a thumbs up -
information to follow after receipt of the replacement
(Other 3 drives checking as healthy)

good storage for the money. 2/24/2020 12:09:02 PM

Pros: should last a long time (we'll see)
had the best gb/$ at the time I bought it (for a larger capacity drive)
Will be ideal for archiving media and projects.

Cons: a bit loud when running, but a nas drive is like that.

Overall Review: Every system should have a fat media hard drive, OS and software on ssd sure, but stick one of these in from the start as well and you won't fill up too quickly. Get more for a raid, or upgrade later.

2 year update: Nowhere even close to advertised speeds 12/12/2019 11:08:23 PM

Pros: easy to install
win 10 easily sees it in the disk manager
its running quietly (not anymore)

Cons: It's loud and has gotten louder. The typical hdd "clicking" noise is through the roof. Every single read/write it does has this hdd sounding like a playing card in a bicycle's spokes.
The read speeds are nowhere near advertised. Benchmarks only show 180 mb/s max down to less than 1 mb min and the real world reads are painfully slow at around 2-4 mb/s (yes, 2-4 mb).

Overall Review: I got this drive for media storage. It only has about 700 gigs on it and the read speeds have gotten so low that it has rendered it practically useless. No, my sata lanes are not throttled; I can hook up a 1tb WD on the same port/cable and get over 200 mb/s every time, and I have tried hooking the Toshiba up to every other sata port I have on 3 separate pc's as well as my friend's pc, none of which have changed the read speeds.

Eventually I decided to short stroke this hdd into 3 partitions as a last resort hail mary before sending it in for warranty. That has gotten my first partition of 600gb to read/write around 100 mb/s with the other two 1.5tb partitions severely degrading in performance the closer it gets to the platter's middle. It's usable now anyway, that's about the best I can say for it.

The first 600 gigs benchmark at 180 mb/s but even when it's short stroked I still get nowhere near those speeds, and even at it's best performance on the short stroke it is still 60 mb/s away from advertised speeds.

I have only ever used Western Digital hdd's over my 30+ years of pc'ing, and this is exactly why. Stay far away from this drive. It's a 4 tb drive with only 600 gigs that are actually usable. Pathetic. I'll be sending it in for warranty, but from what I have read, Toshiba's warranty department is flat out garbage and they don't actually send you a new drive, just a check for your purchase price. So if you get this drive on sale, you are doomed. Stay away.
