can i plug another switch into this switch if i run out of ports?

It depends on how many switches are before it.  I think the limit is 3 or 4 cascaded, but if you have only one other switch between this switch and the router, then yes.  But it's best to buy a switch with enough capacity to meet future needs.  The cost of additional ports won't be as much as buying two switches, plus you'll lose two ports to connect the switches to each other.

For example, if you buy a 16-port switch you get 15 ports after connecting it to your router.  But if you buy 2 8-port switches, you only get 13 ports because there will be 6 useful ports on the 1st switch after connecting it to the router and the 2nd switch, and only 7 ports left on the 2nd switch after connecting it to the 1st switch.

Is there a particular port you have to hook the router to, or will any one of the eight do ?

Any one will do.  I have to put the router cord into port 1 because of OCD though.

I bought a switch before and discovered that it was simply for connecting computers together. The additional computers did NOT get the Internet. Assuming this switch is connected to my cable modem, will all remaining ports deliver Internet signal?

No. You need a router to specifically handle the internet connection. Routers are used to bridge two different networks (the internet is one network and your home is the other). A switch is only meant to handle connections between computers/devices on the same network. Most routers have switches built into them, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from. I bought this switch to extend a friend's home network. She already had a router to handle splitting the internet to different devices in her home, but she only had one cable running to her living room. I put the switch in the living room so she could have all her devices (game consoles, Apple TV, Blue-ray, TV) connected to her router at the same time.

Does this have mounting points, so I can mount it inside my home network cabinet?

Yes, there are two mounting holes that have slots oriented so that it can be mounted horizontally or vertically.

I have reviewed the answers but remain uncertain. With a Verizon FIOS Quantum Gateway router connected to this 8-port gigabit switch, via a Cat5e cable, allow several computers, also connected to this switch, have internet access? The router has one WAN port and four LAN ports. The router is located in a different room from the computers with only one Cat5e cable run between the rooms. Thanks for any clarification.

This switch will work with your setup.  Because it uses a wire to communicate, there is no problem with having the router in one room and the switch and computers in another room.  The switch itself just provides a path for all devices plugged into the switch to communicate with each other.  But the router and computers must be properly configured or they cannot communicate with each other, whether they are connected by the switch or even a direct connection.  In fact, you can test that the communications are working by connecting individual computers directly to the router.  If they work when directly connected to the router, they will work with the switch.  DHCP is the simplest configuration for making this communication work.  Both the router and the connected computers must be configured to use DHCP.  Most routers and computers are set up to use DHCP by default, so if things don't work, you should check the router and the computers to be sure they are using DHCP.  You need to check the router and computer operating system manuals for instructions if you need to configure them for DHCP.

I think the answer is yes, but are the led's on the front distinguish between gigabit devices and 10/100 devices?

which would be faster, one 16port 10/100 switch, or two 8port 10/100/1000 switches?

It would depend on your needs.  Technically a gigabit switch will be faster than a 10/100, so technically two 8 port gigabit switches would be faster.  Typical internet does not move at gigabit speeds so it is kind of pointless if that is all you do.  But if you have a NAS or other network media, then go gigabit.

Will this work with internet ready devices: tv, bluray player, wd media player, etc?

It will work with any device that has an Ethernet port.

A:Yes as long as they all have Ethernet connectors.

A:The only effect will be slightly slower speeds due to the added bandwidth usage.
Conclusion: I have never had a blueray or dvd player with an Ethernet connection. make sure these are networkable devices.

setting a wired network at home primarily for gaming / streaming/ surfing, i narrowed down a router considering we have about 10 systems that stretch between 2 rooms will one of these in each room be sufficent to accomondate the  load?

The brunt of the load's going to be through your router. I'd be more worried about that than the switch. As for this switch, it will run quickly a efficiently in your set-up.
