Question 1

Question for buyers of this item from Feb/Mar 2016 and beyond - did you receive the V2 version of the switch (which has a web interface, not requiring Windows to configure) or did you get the old V1 version of the switch (must have Windows/Java to configure)? It makes a big difference to me since our shop is all-Linux. Thanks!

I  just ordered one a week ago. . .still got v1.0 (probably reason for rebate - to help clear inventory).  I also would have preferred the web interface version.  I didn't know v2 existed until I went to the website to make sure and get the most recent config utility.  I wish the listing would specify the version.  Configuration tool is actually quite nice, but I don't like the requirement to have a full windows desktop to configure.  I haven't put it in production yet, might return it and wait for v2 hardware to get listed.

No, the vendor uses a 9v 0.6A power supply.  You will need to convert it some how.

Hi if anyone could help would be nice.  Can this switch be directly connected to a cable modem. I read the manual it says DHCP can be enabled. I haven't opened it but have to cut the box for rebate. Basically I have TWC cable modem, out of that on one port have a wireless router in the living room that covers the whole house. another port goes directly to a smart blue ray player in living room. Another port goes into an older wireless router and then I use 3 ports wired out of it to my computer/game/ music room. I just want one cable to run to my room and then split it from there as two more wired devices are going to be needed. So there would 5 devices on this, once i set up the network i should be able to save files to multiple computers  right? Sorry for the somewhat disjointed question. I guess I need to know if I have to come out of the router or can use the TWC (Arris TG1672G)modem. another question if I bought a cable modem they only have on port out so i would have to use a router then split it with this correct? Thanks

The switch simply allows you to connect more than one device to an Ethernet feed. The real question is how your cable modem is configured. In some cases the modem is acting as the router while in others, the modem is operating in a bridge  mode. The main difference between the two is that in bridge mode, the modem is passing everything that comes to it. There is no firewall nor DHCP. The network on the other (LAN) side is completely exposed. If this is the case, then you should have your own router and connect the switch to same and let the router manage the DHCP. If the modem has a wireless function then it likely also has a built-in router for both wired and wireless. The switch will operate just fine behind the modem as well. The number of ports on a given modem is not necessarily an indication of the modem needing a router, but I prefer to have a router of my own choosing regardless. In your case, I would use one modem port, go into a router and then from the router into the switch and then to the various devices. Depending on the devices being used, you may need to do some port forwarding.

Will this switch support multiple VLANs trunking over 1 port?

Accepted Answer

Yes, of course.  Simply assign the port to multiple vlans as "tagged" (dot q).  This way, all data leaving that port will retain its tag.

This gives you a lot of flexibility since you can mix tagged and untagged traffic on the same trunk line, so be careful.   I create a "dead end" vlan and set the PVID to it just in case some unwanted untagged data comes flying into my trunk.

Works pretty well as far as I can tell.
