Can it be mounted on the wall?

Doesn't look like. There are only 4 rubber bumper pads on the bottom, no screw holes.
I don't there are holes UNDER the pads, since it's quite small, but I'm hesitant to tear one out.

Good unit overall; I'd look into add-on wall mounts (via outdoor-quality double-sided tape) if it's a deal-breaker.

Question 2

My existing modem/router has 4 ports do I just plug this in to any of those and that is all I need to make the 8 ports active?

correct. plug an ethernet cable from any port on your router into any port of this switch. make sure you plug the power cable into this switch as well. you will now have 7 ports on this switch available for other devices. by the way, i have had this switch for 2 years now, its been amazing!

Question 3

I have 2 questions my modem/router has 4 ports, if I use one to run this switch will the other 3 still be OK to run other devices? 
The other question is, if I put this switch on the other end of the cable run to my living room and hook it up there will it be OK to run all the devices in my living room where I have my TV, TIVO box, Fire TV box, Blue ray player and DVD player all of which have RJ45 ports.?

Yes.  That's how I have mine.  My main router is the central hub.  Each of the 4 ports on the router has a single cable going to another room, and in that room I have this 8-port switch for devices in that room.  Even in the same room the router is in, I run a cable to another one of these switches where the devices in that room attach.

Question 4

Does Auto-MDIX mean I can plug into any port at any time?

Auto MDIX means auto crossover, so you wont need to utilize cross-over cables when connecting to other switches.

Question 5

It is spec'd as having LED port indicator lights but what information is conveyed?  Is it the old standard with no light = no connection, yellow light = 100Mb, and green light = 1Gb, or something else?  I wish they would stick to the better option for port status which is two LEDs per port with left being 100Mb, right being 10Mb, and both being 1Gb.

On mine, the LEDs are green for any speed connection (10/100/1000 megabit) and dark for no connection.  The LED blinks as data flows on the connection.

I tried connecting this Trendnet switch to a variety of devices: another old switch that's 10 megabit only, a few older PCs with 10/100 megabit Ethernet, and a couple of newer PCs with 10/100/1000 megabit Ethernet.  I only ever get a green light or nothing on the Trendnet switch.

Question 6

What is the difference between this and the TEG-S80g? I can't see a difference in the specs, what am I missing?

I don't know but this one works very well for me. There has been no downtime and never went down for me.

does this support vpn?

It's just a switch. Think of it as a hub.  It just relays Ethernet packets from one port to another.

It doesn't do anything that will create a VPN.  It doesn't do anything that will block a VPN.
