How easy is the installation process for this SSD?

It's pretty easy to install this SSD.

is this a gen 4 x2 or x4 drive?

The drive uses a PCI-Express 4.0 x4 interface.

Is this 2TB with heatsink compatible with the ZINK SSD Enclosure, or similar enclosures?

I have not had these enclosures, but I would say no. I Use an ASUS ROG external SSD enclosure and this would not fit in there. The WD Drive is housed in its own heatsink that is over a half inch thick. These external enclosures act as their own heatsinks and are intended to seat up against the SSD to offer their own thermal dissipation.

can I install this ssd with heatsink in a Thinkpad X1?

I would say that's a hard no. The heat sink is quite thick, and without good airflow in a laptop I doubt it would help much anyways. But modern SSD's are quite durable!
