Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500YD 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: First of all, unlike the previous reviewer stated, the KS series only comes with a 3 year warranty and the YD series comes with a 5 year. Second, the KS is an SE the YD is an RE, the big difference is for Hot Swapping and RAID. The KS does NOT support Hot Swapping. The YD was made to RAID! Hence the RE.

Cons: I have owned all 3 Western Digital 250GB SATA drives, the JS, KS, and YD series. All bought here at Newegg. The KS ran very hot, 51C idle, the JS at 46C and the YD at 39C. I've bought 5 YD's - No failures or DOA's. I've bought 2 KS's and both had to be RMA'd.

Overall Review: Newegg is still the best after 3 years shopping. I don't shop anywhere else online. You cannot go wrong with Newegg prices and support period.

Pros: Fast. Quiet. Cheap. Newegg delivers quickly.

Overall Review: This is an OEM product. You'll need to download DataLifeguard from Western Digital website to partition and format the drive. Installed this drive in a Dell E510. Make sure you enter the setup screen (hit F2 during startup sequence) and check that SATA2 is *on*. The factory default is supposed to be "on" but on my machine it was "off". So DataLifeguard didn't detect the HD after I turned on the computer. As for the additional SATA data cable you might be purchasing: it's worth taking off the panel to your computer and checking to see if you would benefit from choosing a cable with an "L" shape at one end -- on my Dell E510 it would have been a real tight fit if both ends were the usual "straight" shape.

Pros: Its a raid specific WD SATA HD with TLER. How can you go wrong?

Cons: This drive iS NOT an SATA 3.0Gb/s drive unless the drive you are shipped is manufactured on or after March 1, 2006. I ordered a couple of these based on NewEgg's specification of SATA 3.0 and they shipped me drives manufactured Sept, 2005. Needless to say they are the old 1.5GB/s SATA drives. Be careful if you order these thinking they are SATA II 3.0GB/s.

Overall Review: Have an RMA and hopefully NewEgg will ship me the ones that match the product description.

Pros: I've never had a problem with western digital so far, and this hard drive is no exception. It was an excellent upgrade from my 160gb maxtor, and its handled everything I've thrown at it with no glitches, meaning I've already installed a few Operating systems, reformatted, and done it again with out any loss in speed or reliability

Cons: Was not free nor did it come with a red bow around it

Pros: Thanks to the posters below for mentioning that this is intended for a RAID setup. I had intended to use it by itself, but it was easy enough to turn TLER off and it is working fine so far. I installed Vista with no problems, and I'm in the process of loading it with data and it's doing fine. There were no bad sectors, it has a fast read/write speed and it's fairly quiet. Time will be the real judge of the quality but so far I am very pleased with it, for being one of the cheapest drives on sale it is performing nicely.

Cons: None really... It's a little noisy, but still quieter than my old 1.5 Gbit/s WD drive. No cables/documentation/jumper/etc., but I was aware of this beforehand, not a problem.

Overall Review: Assuming this drive will last for a while, I would definitely buy it again.

Pros: Well, it's a HDD... 16mb od cache, the newer versions of the Caviar's are now silver, intead of black (I'm speaking of the HDD case in respect to the color change, this of course makes no real difference, however if you care about that kind of thing, now you know)

Cons: Um, not 1Tb & not FREE!!!

Overall Review: These drives have both 4-pin molex as well as SATA power hook-ups, so that might come in handy for those out there w/ older PSUs or the lack of adapters. Just a thought. Good drives, I love WD & Newegg, as usual, great job getting them to me very quickly!!!

Overall Review: Only had this a few days so longevity is the only real question. Otherwise this drive is a tremendous bargain at $39.99 and free shipping.
