Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: bought 4 of these - they all work fine. these DO NOT get unusually hot as some people have said. also, they ARE NOT noisy. I have about 8 other hdd's and these function about the same as the rest.

Cons: I was a little hesitant to purchase these because of some of the bad reviews on here. any hdd manufacturer is going to have some hdds that die, it's inevitable. I checked seagates reviews because they are supposedly 'the best'. they have about the same number of bad reviews due to DOA drives. I've only had these for about a week, if they die I will write another review

Overall Review: I choose the highest technical rating I could because I see plenty of people on here who've chosen higher tech ratings and yet they don't understand some basic concepts about these. THIS DRIVE WILL AND SHOULD FORMAT TO 698GB. the math is simple 750GB = 750,000,000,000bytes divide that by 1024 and you get how many KB in windows, again and you get MB, once more and you get GB (698.49193096160888671875). it's not 750 x 1000 / 1024....

Pros: This is my 3rd 750GB SE16 drive by WD. I've always bought WD and NEVER had a drive failure (over 10 years). This one is actually very fast and has never had a problem. All 3 are performing flawlessly, and it's hard to beat the price right now.

Cons: None so far. It's not a 10k drive.

Overall Review: Price is great, great drive. Thanks always to Newegg.

Pros: Good price for a 750G drive. WD is usually pretty reliable.

Cons: I ordered 4 of these from Newegg the last time they were on sale. 1 was DoA and sent back to Newegg, which took a month to replace. As soon as that drive was returned, a second drive died. I had the second drive swapped by WD, who only took a week to replace it. The drives from Newegg were manufactured mid-2007 and the one from WD was less than 1 month old, which means they were probably sitting around in a warehouse somewhere or it was a bad batch of drives.

Overall Review: Make sure you download the drive diagnostics tools from WD and thoroughly test these drives before trusting them with your data.

Pros: i've been using this for backups. quick, no problems so far.

Cons: none so far.

Pros: Huge capacity - great price - very Fast - very, very quiet. I'm seriously considering another although I don't need the space...yet :)

Cons: None that I can tell - I guess 1 TB would have been nice - but how much prrron does one man need?

Overall Review: I finally dumped my ancient Raptor 36gb x 2 RAID I was using for my Windows boot drive. This is just as fast, 100% quieter, and 10x as big. I've bought about 5 or 6 HDs when I saw good deals - every brand - even wd - and this is the one drive that has made me happiest - fastest and quietest by far. Get this one now.

Pros: Price! at $150 this is the best price/size ratio around! I bought 5 of these, with no shipping cost and no tax, was a great bargain. I have them running in a 5-bay eSATA case and am very pleased.

Cons: None. I didn't mind that it's OEM at all. The only diff between OEM and retail package is lack of screws and support disc, which I didn't need. I think you only really need the disc for some older mobos that don't support volumes over 230GB...

Overall Review: Some people seem to knock Western Digital... I've owned drives of all brands over the years, Maxtor, Samsung, Seagate, and many WDs before these, and I'v never had trouble with any of them.

Pros: I purchased this drive for large amounts of archives. The drive formats to 699GB, which is fine. My main praise for this drive is the low power consumption. I already have 10 other drives in a Lian Li mid tower. This drive only consumes around 11W under a full load, so that helps keep heat to a minimal gain.

Cons: I wish the warranty was 5 years instead of 3. At least its not 1.

Overall Review: I've had good luck with WD drives for over 15 years, this one hopefully won't disappoint. As always, Newegg was lightning fast on order processing and shipping.

Pros: Very quiet, very cool only added 1 degree C to my system temp. Most SATA's run hot, this one was cool. Big and cool ...... just got to be COOL!

Cons: None. It's not free, Ha ha. See TIP below how to optimize working with these big drives and avoiding startup problems.

Overall Review: My advice to all is that you do a quick Low Level Format using the DOS WD Diag floopy before formating this drive in order to make sure there isn't a disk manager installed or junk saved on the Boot Sector. I avoid all basic startup problems by always LL Formating a new hard drive, then use a Utility like Partition Magic to create all my new NTFS partitions, then formating and checking each partition. Then if transfering a saved OS image is very, very easy. The LOW LEVEL FORMAT is a MUST if you have problems getting the drive recognized by the OS or other Utilities. I use the Powerquest Disk Image 2002 and Partition Magic Utilities in DOS for fast image backups or creations. Then xfering the working OS backup from one drive to the other is easy. Saves many hours of work. You then don't need any Virus Protection, just keep ~ 3 backups of your OS image (takes about 5 minutes to Create or Restore a 10GB OS) maybe twice a month. Maybe also avoid some of these drive returns to Newegg. JMHO
